Question Alternator Help Please!!

I tried to go out last night and when I started the car all the warning lights came on and stayed on. First thing I did was shut it off and then search the forum for this problem. From what I can find it looks like time to rebuild the alternator. I have 12.5v at the battery with the car shut off and 18.5v with the car running!! All the threads I could find talk about low voltage from the alternator I have never heard of over charging as a symptom of a bad alternator. It is making a noise that it didn't before and I just replaced the airpump about 1 week ago. Anyone have this problem before?

An alt can over charge and burn things up , fry electronics . If you get another one have it tested before installing it .

I haven't driven it since saturday. It looks like it is going to cost about $190 to get it rebuilt, OUCH!! What they say about everything being expensive in Hawaii is true.

When it comes to FD's, expensive parts are not exclusive to any one continent, they're all expensive. $190 sounds pretty close to an average price for a rebuild.
