Alternator Disassembly

OK so I have my alternator mostly apart so I can powdercoat the housing. However I can't get the middle coil section detached from the back. I have taken out three screws, but it still won't come apart. I assume it has to with the black plastic piece screwed on the back, but I can't get that off, and am afraid to break something and wind up buying a new alternator.

Please, tell me how to detach the back housing from the coil/brush assembly.

Thanks,
Josh

I posted a quick write up in a similar thread:
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/how-remove-rotor-stator-400103/

In short, there are 4 screws. 3 are easy to get to (as you found). The 4th is in conjuction with the positive terminal on the back of the alternator (the black plastic piece, as you described it). You need to remove this.

Let me know if you need more help.

-Also, point of advice: if you're having it powder coated, make sure that you sand down a portion of the interior of the casing for the grounding, as well as the outside of the casing where it bolts to the engine (the casing and mounting points are used for grounding).

Thanks! I typed in "alternator disassemble" "alternator disassembly" and "alternator assemble," but couldn't find anything.

One question though; you say remove the positive terminal. What is the trick to removing it. Just unscrew and pull until it comes out?

Basically, yes. Once the screw is out, the black plastic piece should just slide right out (assuming that I'm remembering this correctly...)
