how to remove rotor and stator?

How do I take apart the alternator? As we all know, the FSM is very vague, so it just shows the rotor and stator coming out. But mine appear to be stuck. I got the front cover off by pounding on it with a hammer, but I am afraid to do that with these two, especially since the stator is gonna have wires coming off the back of it and I don't want to break them. In the FSM, it looks like they have removed the shaft that runs through the middle of the rotor, but I'm not sure. Can anybody give me a hand? Thanks.

hmm the starter is very simple to change. A total of 4 bolts/nuts if I am not mistaken.
The starter is very simple as well. You might have to wiggle it out since it fits on quite tight.
The FSM told me all that I needed to know about the removal of both. Hope that helps some

He's not talking about removing the alt he's rebuilding the alt itself.

The rotor just rides on a few bearings (one located in the front housing, and one in the rear). After the front cover is off, the rotor will be able to be separated by pulling it straight out. It's a pretty tight fit, so usually you have to do some wiggling and pounding in order to break it loose. It'll come out eventually.

The stator is a different story altogether. It is wedged into the housings pretty tightly (as you found out when you had to beat the front housing loose with a hammer) and also soldered to the rectifier (highlighted as part #7 on pg G-13 of your FSM). The FSM states that you need to de-solder it from the rectifier (4 points) and then pull it loose from the rear housing. The only problem is, that's some damn strong solder and it takes a really good soldering gun to get it loose.

I've found that you can also do the following: pull the stator loose from the rear housing slightly (tap it with a hammer slightly as you work your way around it. It will eventually start to come loose). Once it's loose from the housing, you have just enough wiggle room to move it out of the way, and get to the rectifier screws (IIRC, there are a total of 4. 3 of them are easily visible, and the 4th is somehow connected to the positive terminal on the back of the rear housing. You'll need to take the positive terminal off first). You can take the entire assembly out this way (stator and rectifier assembly). Of course, if you need to replace the rectifier, you'll still need to de-solder it.

Hope that helps at least a little bit,
-Rob

That was just what I needed. Thanks! I actually ended up putting the shaft from the rotor in a vise and, tapping the housing with a hammer in a couple of places to break it up, and they pulled right apart.

(And since somebody else claimed my thread was "hard to find," I'll throw in some good search words here: alternator disassembly removal rotor stator)
