I think my alternator is going out. Sometimes it cherps. If it is going out does anyone know if it would set off an engine code. I get a check engine light every now and then. I have not made it to the dealer to have the code read yet, but I plan to this week. Any clues? Thank you.

 

If you take it to any auto store like Autozone/pep boys/tarck auto. They will usually test them for free.

 

The signs, of my alternator before it went, is that the car would idle really bad and blow black smoke with the check engine light, oil light, coolant light, ABS light, and the battery light staying on or flashing. Also all the lights would get dimmer as i drove the car. Just order one and put it in yourself. Very easy job, only like 4 or 5 bolts. Just the belt is a pain in the ***.

 

I had a bad alt couple a weeks ago. I thought it was the air pump(A/P clutch was clicking). The alt had an open field winding. I had a hard time finging one here in Phoenix. Special order for $250-$350. I ended up having it rebuilt for $99. reinstalled it and it works fine.

 

Yeah sounds like it maybe going out. Do you know what your voltage is reading. If it's in the high 13s 14ish it should be ok still on the charging. If it's geting low then thats it.
