So what exactly is going on with the flames in this vid? I searched, but didn't not what to search for.
I remember hearing once about how you can get your car to backfire to keep the turbo spooled, is that what's going on here? How exactly does a system like that work?

It's a 3-rotor, for starters, and in the original thread that video was linked to there was mention that the decel fuel cut likely wasn't turned on. An engine under no load that's still getting fuel will get some flamage.
It's not really for a purpose, it's just not fully tuned in.
But, in general, in a VERY high horsepower turbo rotary with full exhaust, you'll get flames on decel due to the huge amount of fuel that's getting dumped into the engine. Take the boost away, and you have fuel without air to go with it. It ignites in the exhaust, and flameage ensues.

Actually found that vid on a Camaro forum, so I didn't know it came from here originally
They were asking about RX7s (gotta defend the rotor in those V8 forums
