all my glass is engraved with a serial number....

I just noticed this......all of the glass in my car is engraved with a serial number and a phone number underneath the serial number. I can only assume it was some form of anti-theft deal, possibly in conjunction with the aftermarket alarm?
I am tempted to call the number, it is an 800 number.....
Anyone else seen this?

Yeah, it IS a security thing installed by the state. So if your car is stripped, you will be able to find the winsows

Hmmmm, I mean it is not the normal, standard D.O.T. info or nothing like that, the side windows are engraved about an inch up from the bottom and right in the middle, lengthwise, and the windshield has it on the drivers side about 3 inches up from the bottom....

Must.......call........the......number......can't. ....resist.....

The ONLY place I have ever seen install those things were the DMV. I know what it is. The serial number is engraved right ON the glass.

Dood, just CALL the number!

I have seen them engrave the windows with the serial number on TV. They said that if your car is stolen the cops looks at the engraving to run the numbers on the computer to see who actually owns the car. They said that most thieves wouldn't replace the windows, because it will get too expensive for them. Also, they would scratch off the other serial numbers on the doors and engine so it couldn't be traced.

I have serial numbers engraved on all my windows as well. I don't think it has a phone number though, but I haven't really looked.

I got them engraved when I bought the car (the sales guy got a commission from it, so he just knocked the price of the car down far enough so that I wasn't actually paying any extra for it).

Don't ask me what the purpose of it is...other than just another pain in the *** for a would-be-thief.
