its an extra overflow resevoir for the cooling system (radiator). i've gathered that the reason its there is to make it easier to "burp" the system to get all the air out because of the way the radiator is located. there are alot of people that eliminate it so its not of dire importance. search for "AST elmination" and you should find out more about that. the stocker though, its a crappy plastic one and do to all the heat that gets trapped in the engine bay, it dries out, gets brittle and can crack for no reason. if you don't eliminate it, you should invest in a new aluminum one. they can be bought new at a number of pages like rx7store.net, pettitracing.com, gothamracing.com, etc. or found in the for sale section (that's where i got mine) right here on the rx7club.

as a noob, be advised man, you will gets lots of "use the search function" responses if you ask lots of basic questions. read around for a while before you post. the search function ain't great, but eventually you can find an answer to just about anything.
