I am doing a bunch of maintenance to my car including water pump and alternator replacement.

I want to refurbish my air pump - clean and paint it. Has anyone taken the clutch / pulley off and the back plate?

I searched and found one thread from nero1106. I PM'd him and he said he didn't try to take it part. So I am looking for other input---besides removing it. May be some day, but not today.

I have the same question... Does the pulley even come off? Today I was trying to take the pulley off to paint the air pump, make it look nice, and i think i ended up breaking it... im pretty sure. Is the pulley removable?... I took off the bolt from the pulley, took off that front plate, then there is a clip (like the ones on the break lines that looks like a small washer but not a complete circle and u slide it into the ridge) dunno wat it's called... took that off, thought the pulley would come off but no.. still staying. cant get it off. tried applying some pressure and prying it off and i chipped the bearing on the inside.. now it makes a scratching/rubbing noise when i spin it. Should i be buying a new one now?...

 

i have taken apart early model pumps without the clutch but i don't have an FD pump here to look at. it should be similar in disassembly to an A/C compressor clutch so you will need special pullers to pull on the clutch from the center hub and NOT the outside pulley(you will damage the roller bearing).

 

You're better off cleaning it as best you can as-is. You WILL destroy it if you try and take it apart.

If you can track down a lower mileage/clean one, like from a JDM engine, that would probably be a good way to go.

I took mine apart many years ago to clean and paint it. It never worked correctly again. Although it looked damn good!

 

Special tool huh? yeah I would have been better off just leaving the damn pulley on there and painting what i could... didnt have to be perfect. But i tried taking it off and what do u know.. i destroyed it. I'm pretty sure. I chipped that center bearing, roller bearing i guess. Although I didn't think it would be a big deal if it's chipped, though dirt and stuff can get in.. but now it makes a grinding/scratching/rubbing noise when I spin the pulley..
Did I destroy it? Should I just buy a new one now or put it on the engine and see if it works still? It started making a grinding noise..
