Air Horn - catching up on writeups part 2

Yeah, this is silly, but ill post it anyway :-)

This is another mod I did last winter, so its been in the car a while and I have had to use it many times.

The track car had no horn, and its not an issue if you trailer it, but drive it to-from the tracks, so I encountered many situations where a suv or semi or just an idiot driver does not see me (or even look)...and I cant do anything but take evasive action...move the time pulling the mini-track-trailer too!!!

So I decided to install an air horn so that I can let people know I am there.

I just picked up a cheapo kit from harborfrieght, here is where I moounted them:

...and the air compressor:

The kit came with everything you need (compressor, horns, hose, relay, et) but the wiring. The only regret I have about them horns is that they are not as low as I expected, I wanted a semi-truck tuba sound, instead I got a fishing boat trumpet sound (hahaha) LOL

Heh Heh, I was thinking of doing the exact same thing for a while now. I bet it's a lot better than the Popeye the Saillor Man *toot* *toot* horn.

I'm guessing its probably in no way legal to have this on your car though.

Went through this a few years ago. Most of the air horns you buy in "kits" are really junk. I got a Fiamm set that lasted 6 months. Not impressed. So I went to "Gregg Distributors" and purchased standard "snail type" truck horns. They are big, heavy, and very loud! And they last. Oh, and they're legal.

It is usually the compressor that fails. Mine was made of plastic. I was tempted to get a good quality one (dam the expense!) but decided that was just too "Four Wheelin" for a sports car! It would have been embarassing to have another member find an air fitting on my car so they could fill their tires. Now if I could get some good quality air adjustable shocks - and have ground clearance for parking lot entries and none for the highway - then that would have sealed the deal!

I agree, I had air horns on my DD and the thing that would fail are the compressors. However, I've had this in my car for over a year or so and it's still working

Yeah I know it looks cheesy, but suprisingly it is lasting long.

Oh yeah, I almost got ran over by a semi truck (next lane over) the other day, and on the freeway, I definitely wish my FD horns were louder...

Personally I've always wanted a set like they have on freight trains. Can you imagine that? It would blast people right off the road in front of you!

Great idea Damian! I was personally thinking of adding a public address system in my car. You could just mimic the sound of a horn.
