Then went to my trusty local mechanic (Riverside Automotive) who repaired the leak at the filler cap and recharged the unit. $120, big difference.

Sounds like a leak to me.
Yes, the same thing happened to me.

Take it to a shop you can trust and have them pull a vacuum on it. It should hold 29 psi vac. for 15 min or so. If it holds then the leak is at the fill port. Mine had a loose low side schrader valve, which was easily repaired. I understand this is a common pattern failure problem. I was quoted $1100+ to repair by other shops, who, in fact were trying to rip me off. I hate thieves.

You mean it should hold 29 inches of mercury as vacuum, not 'psi', of course....

On your Schrader valve issue, you say it was "easily repaired"....how so?

the valve is just diff rubber than a tire valve. there are kits that allow changing without venting the system

if you are worried about your mechanic not "understanding" what is going on with the valve change over for r134... you need a new mechanic/shop

I just had to decipher the damn wiring diagram manual which to me looks like Japaneese calculus in braille but that was my problem .. the damn (r) wiper fuse fell out. I dont know where you guys are but its hot as hell in Florida...

That's antiquated info. That's if whoever installed the PFC didn't set up the PFC correct. The PFC requires adequate (15+ min easy) to learn the car's idle, INCLUDING with the accessories, A/C and both on. Moreover, depending on what PFC version you have (US vs. JDM), and what FD you have (93 vs. 94 - 95), sometimes you have to splice wires to get the A/C to work.

In short, if PFC = no A/C, we woulda heard a HUGE ruckus about it by now. I have a PFC. In fact, I've had it for the last 20,000+ miles (aka 4 years) on my FD, and my A/C blows ice cold. I DID, however, lose the rev buzzer when I installed the PFC for some reason https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/anyone-ever-bring-back-redline-buzzer-after-getting-pfc-323231/

RX7SIGN, for good local shops, here are two:

1) J&L Auto Electric --> they did the A/C on Patfat's car. They've been doing A/C and electrical stuff for 40 years. Fast service too.
