Air Box Question

does a perfomance air filter REPLACE the air box? or work in conjunction with it?

"Replacing the restrictive stock air box with the RE Amemiya Performance Intake System is an easy way to free up SAFE horsepower. The filter design is very efficient as well as being a great way to dress up the engine bay. This kit is very easy to install and can be performed with normal tools and without any modifications to the body." -rx7.com

the reason I ask is because my airbox is cracked and needs to be replaced. If a performance part can replace it I'd rather do that.

Thanks from the newbie.

Any aftermarket filtration system with the exception of the drop in K&N filter and the Racing Beat duct completely replaces the stock airbox.

Everything I have heard says the Apexi filters are better in filtration and flow than the others.

I would recoment the M2 for it closed COLD air design and because it uses K&N Filters, BUT it is rather expen$ive. The APEXi would be my second choice because it's filters are even better than K&N but it is not a true COLD AIR design,. You can fabricate Heat Shields & Baffles to make it into a cold air system. stay away from FOAM element filters they don't filter or flow very well and deteriorate quickly
