Question Air box mod

I have a stock airbox in my car. Some one told me that you get more out of making holes at the bottom of the box and running some sort of piping to the front of the car to make it sort of a ram air system - as opposed to an aftermarket intake that's going to take hot air from the engine bay. Any one done that mod? Tips? How does it perform? Thanks
