Aftermarket water temp gauge sender

I'm wondering where I should tap into the cooling system to put the temp sensor for my Autometer water temp gauge. Can I splice it into the stock sending unit and expect it to work? Should I replace my stock unit with the Autometer unit and run them both to that? Do I need to make use of a different place to mount it? I already ran a search on this and I didn't find anyting. Thanks!

So I take it that splicing into the stock sender is a bad idea. Also, I was planning on replacing the stock oil pressure sender with the Autometer unit. Will the stock gauge work if connected to the Autometer unit?

I put my water temp sender at the thermostat housing, this is the best place to get water temps out of the motor. The stock temp sender is back at the #2 rotor this is supposed to be the hottest part of the engine I dont see how?
