I am pleased to have found a steering wheel adapter than makes the installation of a Momo, Sparco or other such steering wheel a simple bolt on job for US Spec air bag equipped 93-95 RX7s.

A couple of years ago I installed a Momo steering wheel on my '92 Miata and loved it. I purchased a custom adapter from "Finish Line Performance" that is designed specifically for the air bag equipped 1st generation Miata. It comes with proper wiring to make the air bag warning light not go on and the horn connection a true plug and play experience. The adapter also cancels the turn signal perfectly.

I wanted to put a Momo Steering Wheel on my FD also and I was remarking at how the steering wheel setup on the two cars appear indentical. So I took a gamble and purchased the same hub adapter I used for my Miata and it works PERFECTLY. No air bag light, horn works fine, turn signals cancel, location is perfect and no cutting wires or modifications at all. The whole install took 20 minutes at a liesurely pace.

on another note, i though a grant steering wheel adaptor for a fc would fit a fd but turns out, it does not. the horn/cruise control stuff gets in the way and you cant fit it on to the hub without taking or breaking the little plastic nub for the horn/cruise control

 

what about the horn??

There is more room for heel toeing because the steering wheel is a little smaller in diameter. It doesn't really block the gauges... maybe a little bit more than the stock wheel cause the rim is fatter but nothing bad.

I got the Momo Competition Wheel. I like the plain black and the design.

Yes, the horn works fine.

 

By the way the adapter is $120 which is kinda pricey. But it's a true bolt on and I find that they ship the same day.

 

better price than the mazdaspeed adapter i am sure.

 

i have a momo wheel coming and this adapter....is there a write up on how to install or is it pretty simple and will learn by taking things apart?

 

Matty, if it was like mine it's uber simple. There is usually instructions in the adapter kit.

basically
1. unplug negative battery
2. remove 10mm bolts on the back of the wheel that is holding the airbag (3, I think)
3. remove airbag.
4. remove wheel nut...its a 22mm or something.
5. remove steering wheel.
6. place new hub on
7. bolt in place with 22mm
8. run wires thru hub (horn and cruise if you have it)
9. place resistor on airbag portion of the plug
10. put plastic cowl over hub
11. bolt new steering wheel to hub.
12. plug in horn to button and snap button in place.

Sounds shitty since you have to remove the clockspring (turn signals won't cancel) and has no provisions for horn/airbag.

 

Get a Works Bell hub.

jkstill, the adapter you are referring to was designed for racing purposes, not street application.

 

And why would that not work on a street car?

 

B/c most of us want the turn signals and horn to work.
