Aftermarket fuel filter question

Hey guys,

I was going to replace my fuel filter with an aftermarket one with AN fittings on the ends. I'm looking at Jegs, and I see some filters that filter to 100 microns, 40 microns, and 10 microns. Any thoughts on which of those I should get? Is 100 or 40 good enough, or do I really need 10?

Of course, I'll make sure I get a filter that can flow enough to keep up with my fuel system.

I'd just pick up a puralator at Advance or a WIX at O'Reilly.

I bought a 40 micron filter (Russel) thinking the same thing.. until I saw the element. It's just a couple of pieces of screen door stacked together. That's why they can make it so small.. because there's almost no filtration (restriction). It would catch a rock but not small items that would clog a fuel injector. Plain and simple, these things are made for carbs, not fuel injection.

To date I haven't seen any aftermarket fuel filters for less than $100 that look like they would filter anything. Almost every one of them is too small and has an element size that is way too open. If I were to do anything now it might be to relocate the factory filter to a location that is slightly easier to get to. Go take a look through the filter department at a AutoZone.. there are a few metal-bodied filters that are threaded for fittings (the replacement filter for my Saab is) and you might be able to find a more suitable location.

I got a look at a Jegs 40 micron filter and it's just as you described, "A couple pieces of screen door." Ah well.... ok, I'll go check out Autozone and see what I can find.
