Aftermarket coils mounts design

I recently found that the Mercury Marine coils firing the T2 (i.e. rear Training) position in my engine had a cracked ferrite. This is a common failure mode for the MM coils, and it has reinforced my considerations of a different coil setup. I'm leaning towards either LX92 coils or a pair IGN-1-CD coils from Brain at BMEP Fuel & Tuning.

The LX92 are relatively large compared to any of coils I've previous considered. Though I can easily arrange a couple under the LIM (Leading?) , I'm at a loss in my setup where to place the other two (Trailing?). So since you're reading this, I could use you're help, especially if you're using the LX92 coils...

So here's the "Pitch"... Could anyone who has mounted Crane LX92 (or LX91) coils PLEASE post pictures depicting where/how they are mounted. Most of my initial design ideas would require unacceptably long high-tension wire lengths. For that matter, I'd appreciate pictures of any aftermarket coil(s) mounting design. I could use some inspirations on this one.

You can see my current setup by following the link in my signature...

I am running all FOUR of my Jacobs C4 coils on a alum plate ,polished of course , that is bolted to a threaded stock hole in the finder .It is below the polished 929 brake master cylinder . The trailing coils are on the top of the plate with the leading coils on the botton of the plate .The spark plug wires are in line with each coil and spark plug ,no wires crossing each other .The longest wire is about seven inches long .The coils are seen from the top and block the plugs from the top .I change plug from the bottom . I am beta testing ing amps for AEM ,that is why I can run four coils .The amp in there now is doing well after more than a years use .

Will the coils fit on the driver's side frame rail, between the frame rail and the motor? Could make them removeable as a coil pack to facilitate easy spark plug changeout and coil testing.

Good luck with it!

Hey Carlos! How's things?

To throw another one out there for ya - Dave at Speed Machine swears by stock LS1 coils. They're cheap, small, and put out a ton of spark. He was drooling/raving about the dwell times he could set with them using a Haltech, but the numbers didn't mean much to me, so they weren't filed in my noggin.

I'm always cautious about a lot of the aftermarket ignition stuff - I've seen a LOT of US-made stuff (MSD, Crane, etc.) just flat out fail/reliability problems. For some things, an OEM-quality part is a good way to go.

DANG, it's a reunion of the "old school" crowd!!!
Seriously, thanks for all of you inputs.

Garf:
I like the over/under mounting bracket design idea. Would make for a space efficient arrangement. If you ever felt like posting a picture, I'd appreciate it.

"TworkRX7":
Sounds like great minds think alike, as your idea of packaging a coil pack has a lot of design similarity to Garf's setup. Because of the size of the LX92's, I suspect that I'm going to have to split up the coils into Trailing and Leading pairs. I can easily get a pain under the UIM. For the Trailing pair, I'm leaning towards constructing a bracket to mount them against the driver's side rail.

Hope you've gotten to enjoy driving your sweet new creation! Obviously, I'm back in the seemingly endless anticipation phase with this latest annoyance.

Dale:
Hey Brotha, always nice to see your kickin it in our rotary obsession.
Appreciate the LS1 coil lead, but unfortunately I have to admit that I'm not convince yet. My main reservation is concern over the inductive nature for the LSi coils. It's one of those "taste geat - less filling" argument between the Inductive ignition kool-aid drinkers on one side, and us CDI drinkers of the cyanide and Hawaiian Punch on the other side.

Your point about OEM parts is well taken... oh, wait a minute, I think the cigarette lighter is the only OEM part I still have on my "Fuel-to-Noise" convertor.
Any ways, please PM a telephone number so we can catch up!

The guru I bought my Motec from says the EXACT SAME THING. We also had a long discussion about the pros & cons of CDI vs inductive etc etc etc. Based on his wealth of knowledge and impressive methanol 13b numbers etc etc etc, i went the 4 ls1 coil setup. Also bought some mounting brackets that he machines and sells, heres a few pics..

Now that is some niccce work .I still have air con and power s so my mount is where it is .I guess the motor heat does not effect the coils . I really like hand made part of that quality .

Thanks... alot. From what I've been told the heat from the motor doesn't have that much of an effect on the coils unless the heat becomes a little extreme. The stock FD coils are mounted under the UIM, the LSX coils are mounted right ontop of the valve covers and they've been proven to support some high HP & boost numbers, cheap, reliable, buy em anywhere - seemed like a win/win/win - plus I can run split and non-wasted spark

I will see if someone will take a picture or two for you .The coils are big so if they will go most any thing will .They are rated at 65 k and with the twin fire digital ignition amp from AEM it looks like four small welders in there when you pull the plugs and put them where you can see them .

Do you have a pic of the routing of your plug wires using that bracket setup?

I think Garfinkle got banned

He is on the other forum. Also Deals Gap aka Herblenny can get get a hold of him.

I think these were custom made back in the day and not sure if they are available unless you have someone else custom make them.

coil mounting

Hi, Has anyone thought of useing cosmo coilpacks. they are mounted on the inner wing and it would make a good upgrade to the fd mounting position. the leads should fit aswell and they are on a nice mounting bracket.

Deja vu all over again!

Dang, I've been screwing around with the ignition system for way too long! I offer in evidence some previous mounts I've tried in chronological order from left to right. The last one being the current Bosch Motorsports coils:
