I recently purchase a 93 touring with single turbo garrett T4/T3 setup. Also came with PFS intercooler (not front mounted).

I would like to know if it would be a good idea to replace the factory BOV with an hks ss or Greddy unit? currently running 7psi of boost. Where should I mount it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

First, what BOV is currently in there? I mean, did the guy just use the BOV from the secondary turbo for it? (were they the same between primary and seocndary turbos??).

As far as I understood, the BOVs on RX7s were apt, though it may depend on how much boost you are actually running - it prob won't hurt to upgrade (and ofcourse you'll get the nice little sound), but not sure if its necessary -esp for the money. (wish I had a single so I could be of more help).

Try asking ont he single turbo board...

Aftermarket BOV are only useful on our cars for looks or sound. I used to own a 95 Eclipse and you wanted to replace the BOV because the stock would bleed after 11 psi. Most people that own a 7 don't run pass 12 or maybe 15 psi and I have never heard of these valves to leak.

 

IF the car still has the twin turbo's but you wanted to replace the BOV, would you need to buy two?

 

No. The car only has one BOV, the other is a CRV that just vents the boost created by the 2nd turbo until 4500 RPM. It is not like a BOV which prevents turbo damage when there is vacuum in the intake manifold.

 

yeah I have the apexi bov. one of my very first mods...I was actually wondering if it served any real purpose besides making noise? does it affect performance at all? do the different settings change anything besides how loud the woosh noise is?

 

BOV offer no performance whatsoever unless you have a leaky one letting boost get out which in our cars is not really an issue. The adjust is just for sound. I have a blitz on the Apexi you have if you adjust the screw in does it get louder or is it when you adjust it out?

 

ok with mine the screw debth effects when the air is blown out. if the screw is all the way in, my bov actually releases pressure even if I take my foot off the gas a little. with the screw like half way...it only blows between shifts. the sound changes with the different size holes you can choose from.

 

I just bought a couple of ARC BOV's. What's the trick to adjusting the setscrew on top?

I attached my air compressor, regulated to 15 lbs, to the inlet with the setscrew backed all the way out.
I could hear & feel Air bypassing through the valve. I tightened the screw until I couldn't hear any air flowing through.
I tested to see if a vacuum would unseat it with the pressure on. It did.
When I tried this same technique with the stock BOV & CRV, they both wouldn't hold more than 5 lbs before they started bypassing air.
Even though the ARC BOV vents into the engine compartment, instead of the air box, I can't hear that sucker working.
I revved the motor in neutral & could feel it vent when I closed the throttle. It wasn't loud at all, the stock BOV was louder venting into the air box. Strange.
Just wondering if any of you guys messed with your after market BOV adjustment.

 

Man...I'm with the concensus, it doesn't do anything for performance, it's basically for a cool noise. Suit yourself if you want to buy one but I think they're a waste of $200 which could be put towards something to actually make you go faster.

 

My carbon dash kit, Aluminum door sills, Unorthodox pulleys, 99 J-Spec tail lights, Mazdaspeed shift **** & oil cap didn't improve performance. They all cost waaaay more than $200, but what the hell. If you got the cash & like to trick out your ride, so be it.
IM sure most of us put stuff on our cars just cause it's cool.
If you believe the pulleys will "add" H.P. I've got news for you, they just look cool. I couldn't measure any significant change. Temp & humidity will add or subtract more H.P. on the road & dyno.
