After 5 weeks of no FD I finally have it back with fresh paint
My photo taking skills really shine here in these pics I took this morning

That is probably the best one. I like the red pinstripe I had him put on my black powdercoated stock wheels. The red center caps I am not too sure about. I may mask off the logo to keep it red and paint the background black.
This next one isnt too horrible. Shows how mirror like the paint is.

Any way, the car looks prectically new. I am very excited. Half of my excitement is that the spoiler and mirrors are no longer pink.

I like the wheels, i didn't even notice the centercap being red until you said something. What I would do is paint the toilet bowl emblem on the center cap red and paint the other part of the cap black, it will look MUCH better. Nice paint job and I'm curious as well how much it cost you.

Quick question...How did you get your stock rims powder-coated black??? I was wondering if you could tell me roughly how much it is to get the powder-coated and by who or if you can do it yourself...
Thanks,

Lookin' nice especially the wheels. I thought about doing the same with the wheels (black powdercoat with red center cap) but I can't find anybody to powder coat for me. I also like the red pinstrip which I never though of.
I think the car looks great.
Leave the centercap alone, it looks fine.
It looks very well done. How much wet-sanding did he do on it?
Did you go with a clear coat or stay with the OEM configuration?

Wow! That looks really nice! I really like the powdercoated wheels with the pinstriping and the red center caps. xstacy7 has a good idea with the caps, but I think they look great as it is. Or....you could paint the "eternal flame" emblem (TOILET BOWL???) black with the red background....that might be pretty sweet.
I remember your faded to pink mirrors in a picture you'd posted once, this looks MUCH better!
That is one great looking car, good job!

Get some wax on that puppy to protect it!
Looks good. As you said, and some others agreed, I think red logo on the caps with black would look better than the red circle.
The pinstripe on the wheel is nice, but from that angle it doesn't look strong enough. I was about to suggest that some more red on the wheel lip would look nicer, but then you into the fine line of putting enough, or putting too much on the lip.
The calipers look like they match. Is that also VR or something close?
Looks good.

To answer a few questions:
Who did it? Custom Automotive Specialists I believe is the name of Charles' shop out here in Mesa, AZ. Mostly he does hot rods and classics. I was in there yesterday and they were chopping the top of some old I think it was a Ford. Lots of nice looking cars in there. The cost? Let me put it this way, it cast more than I paid for my '87 Turbo II 6 years ago. That did include a small crunch on the fender and alot of door dings and such. Now I am very poor.
The powder coat on the wheels was $225. That seems to be about typical. Of course the wheels need to be broken down before and put back together after so add about $50 to that cost. There are lots of places around that will powder coat wheels, just call a local painter and ask who they use to powder coat.
The shade is color matched to VR. I am not sure how much wet sanding was done. All I know for certain is that the engine bay still has alot of crap in it left over from wet sanding dripping into it. I need to get out and clean that up soon. Oh yes, and it is clear coated.
The stripe on the wheels I think is just about right. If you look at the stock wheels there is a slight groove around the outside edge, maybe 1/8" or so. That is what was used to make the line and I am happy with that size. Any more red and I think it would have been too much.
I think I am going to go with the red logo on the center caps and paint the background of them black. The red circle is too much, I just need to find a black paint that will match the wheels.
Calipers are the same paint as the rest of the body. He had some leftover paint and just blasted them, he charged $50 for the stripe on the wheels and the calipers and really I dont think much of thatl was the calipers.
As for wax being bad, I dont know. I asked if I needed to take any special care of it and he said the only thing I cant do is run it through a high pressure car wash. Waxing is fine, or anything else I want to do is ok.
And did I say that I am very happy with how it turned out? I feel like I just got a new car! Thanks for the comments.

Mazda probably wanted to "upsell" the Touring model, I believe the Touring package was around $4K (remember that was in 1992 dollars). That is pretty spendy for leather, rear wiper, Bose and fog lights IMHO, so they gave the Touring "Hi-Reflex" paint that ended up being discontinued due to quality problems.
