Alright, here's the situation. I've actually got a 2nd gen with a T04S on a race gas tune, but I figured more guys in the FD section would have high horsepower/torque cars and thus more knowledge for picking a clutch at this power level.
I currently have the ACT solid 6 puck with heavy duty pressure plate and a lightweight flywheel (don't know how light, previous owner did clutch and flywheel). The car dyno'd 297rwtq, but my new setup will be at higher boost, so let's say 320ish at the wheels. The current solid 6 puck holds fine, but the chattering is annoying (but liveable) while the noisy engagement is unbearable. I am sure it's clutch noise.
I have decided to stick with ACT, so don't suggest anything else. The problem is that the performance street disc is rated for 380 lb/ft of torque at the flywheel... that's really pushing it on my setup, especially if I ever go with a bigger turbo. The car is mostly for the street and road courses but I want to be able to take it to the strip and not have the clutch slip. I have a friend with an FD on stuck turbos who has the performance street disc, and I like the way it drives. But he's not making the torque I am.
I called the ACT sales guy and he said the sprung 6 should have better engagement than the sold disc, and should have less noise. But he didn't have much Rx-7 specific knowledge so he couldn't say for sure if the noise would be eliminated. I want that **** gone. It's embarassing... maybe there was some mistake made when the clutch was installed (FC has a push-type clutch unlike the FD), but either way I don't want to hear squealing anymore.
So can anyone speak from experience about the sprung ACT 6 puck? I would hate to get the 6 puck and still hear the noise, but I would also hate to get the disc and have the clutch slip. And upgrading to an Xtreme pressure plate is not an option.

I have experience with an ACT sprung 4 puck. It is very streetable, especially if you have experience driving a solid 6.
My friend went front driving a solid 6 and drove my car for a bit and thought that it was just a street clutch.
From what I hear, a sprung 6 is easier to handle than a sprung 4.
You still get a little bit of the squealing, but not nearly as much as you do with the solid. My friend's FC would squeal EVERY time he engaged.

My engine was right in that area power wise and I had the street disc with the extreme pressure plate... it was the perfect clutch really... very streetable, and grabbed really hard! Never slipped! I can sell you the setup, only 8000 miles (if it works on FC cause I am not sure). I will give you a SMOKING deal, PM me if interested.
FWIW, the pressure plate has more to do with the holding power of the clutch than the disc. If you are going to use a pressure plate that really isn't up to the torque, switching discs is more of a band aid. The xtreme pressure plate with the SS disc has more holding power than the sprung 6puck and HD pressure plate. It is much more streetable and doesn't make any noise.

But the xtreme disc is a pain in the ***. Same friend I mentioned before has the xtreme pp with a solid 6. My vote is for the HD + SS, but if you're afraid of blowing the clutch HD + G6 (Sprung 6) should work fine.

mine isnt act, but its a sprung 6, i don't have any squealing when it's engaged. the torque rating was close to 400, though i have yet to test it out much on launches or high boost. (500 miles to go for engine break in)

I loved the up take. The clutch felt just right, just the right amount of pedal effort, not too much, not too little. It had a good engagement range, it didn't slip, and it didn't make noise.
personally if the extreme pressure plate for an FD is too much pedal effort, you might want to rethink sports cars. It was almost exactly the same amount of pedal effort as my STOCK e36 M3.

The FC pivot ball is known to fail with an xtreme pressure plate. I've seen it happen multiple times to different cars. I don't want to deal with that. It's not the pedal effort, I don't care about that as it is not a daily driver. The biggest concern is the noise. And FD clutches don't work on an FC.
A friend of mine has a Vr-4 with a clutch that has a 600 lb/ft torque capacity (you can imagine the insanity of 5000+ rpm launches on an AWD car with that kind of torque. 1.6 60's on **** sumitomo street tires). Now THAT is a heavy clutch.
So anyway, does anybody else have experience with the sprung 6 puck? Again, the biggest concern is the damn noise. I don't even care if it squeals only off a launch (4000rpm+), I just can't stand coming off a stoplight slowly and having to hear it a bit, or really hearing it starting on a hill. Hell, sometimes I hear it when I downshift.

I have the Xtreme PP and the solid 6. Drives like pure crap but never slips or squeels (unless the 4" exhaust is masking?).
I always thought there were more high power FCs than FDs. Due to production volume and more money left over for modding.

I have the ACT Solid 6 puck and Xtreme Pressure Plate and I dont have any problems with it. For the first few days it was pretty stiff but ever since finishing the break-in its not bad at all and I never have any noise or chatter. And this setup never slips and can handle up to 5xx ft/lbs of torque.
I have a ACT 6 puck sprung disk clutch, I have not noticed any squealing but it does chatter occasionally. I have done a couple launches with this clutch and no slippage yet, so I like it.
I ordered mine from turboimport.com, but they did not have it in stock so make sure they have one before you order. The price was good even with the wait. They shipped the normal stuff right away and overnighted the clutch as soon as they got it from ACT
