ABV operation, will it vent if......

the vac hose nipple is not connected to anything?

I'm troubleshooting my low boost. I'm still in the market for a good hand pump for supplying vac and pressure, so I used a bike pump to apply pressure to the turbo inlet (from y pipe) with no connection to the vac hose nipple. Plenty of air was squeezing through the valve, making a honking noise if I pumped really hard. If I sucked on the nipple (haha) I heard the valve "pop" and the air vented as you would expect, rather smoothly.

I haven't got the right tools to apply pressure to the vac hose nipple properly yet.

Is this normal operation? The troubleshooting sites say that if you apply a slight vacuum to the vac hose nipple, SOME air will be vented. Because of the way it was worded, I expected NO air to be vented with zero pressure at the nipple.

Hmmmmmm OK it seems I'm getting confused between this;

Test for leakage and operation. With nothing connected to port (A), verify that port (B) can hold 15 psi of pressure and/or that port (C) can hold 30 inHg. With a vacuum tester apply 3.9-6.7 inHg of vacuum to port (A), verify air will flow from port (B) to port (C). At 9.2 inHg of vacuum to port (A) the valve will be fully open.

And the info contained in this old thread

Was it something I said?

I wonder if I said something to offend somebody.............?

Don't make me start a new thread with a more interesting title like

"HELP! the boogieman stole my boost"

or something.

Can anybody clarify if the stock ABV (or BOV) should hold boost pressure with no connection to the vac hose nipple please? Or does it require pressure on the vac nipple to hold the valve closed? The FSM didn't help much on this one.
