About to replace my tranny and diff oil...
Hi everybody,
I'm about to replace my tranny and diff oil and here is the list of things I will need which I got after some searching on the site.
-3 quarts REDLINE MTL (transmission)
-2 quarts REDLINE 75-W90 (differential)
-3 aluminum washers from MAzda (replaces tranny drain plug (large), diff fill plug, and diff drain plug.
-liquid teflon sealant (already have it)
-clear hose and pump
I got a got all the how-tos by somebody named 'Anon'. I'm guessing that the list has everthing I need. My only questions are about the new washers and plugs.
Are all the washers the same size or are they different sizes? Also, is there a part number or do I just go in and tell the dealer I need new washers for a tranny and diff fluid change?
And this might be a silly question, but I do not replace any of the actual plugs themselves do I? I think I read that on one of the 'how-to' sites, but it doesn't sound right to me.
TIA

It's up to you, but I've changed my diff/tranny fluid a few times and have never used new plugs or washers. To date, I haven't had a single leak from either. So, it's up to you. If you insist on using new washers/plugs, just go to Mazda and tell them you want a diff washer/bolt, whatever. It probably won't be too cheap, but they should be able to get it.

I've never had to replace plugs/washers either.
You don't need teflon.
What kind of pump you using? Remember, gear oil is thick so you need a pretty strong suction. Any autoparts store has pumps specifically for this purpose.
I talked to Redline and they recommended that I use MT-90 for the trans.

I used new washers but no thread treatment (there's oil on the threads to begin with).
You don't need to replace the plugs unless they are leaking or damaged. I just wiped off the metal filings on the magnetic ones.
I suggest setting the oil containers out in the sun to get it softened, and then use a nice long tube to pour it in. Hold the filled funnel as high as possible to speed up the fill. I did mine with cold oil at 50F, and it took FOREVER. I had also bought a $3 squeeze pump that didn't do ****.
