99spec (and/or later) OEM radio/headunit?
I got random hits here and there, but nothing real solid on this. Anyone ever get one of these bad boys and use it in their FD? I know there was talk of the frequency not being the same for the radio, but my R34 (used) came w/ a non-OEM Sony headunit from J-land, and while it has funky frequencies not used here, I can also tune to US stations as well.
Simply said, I think the OEM headunit looks incredibly slick, while still not looking out of place. Anyone ever get one?

PS: Notice that this is a pic from a Spirit R...and not only is the shifter, shifter boot, steering wheel, and e-brake boot stitched in red, but the e-brake HANDLE is stiched in red too!! That's next on my list of parts

Got one in mine. I think its pretty good, sounds OK and also has the 6 CD auto changer behind the facia. I'm in the UK, and the frequencies the radio picks up are not the main UK radio stations - but easily fixed with a frequency shifter. It looks fine, and fits in with the car - personally I've no plans to take it out and change it.
If you haven't already seen it, here's a page from the late spec catalogue:

Allmost all headunits in europe look like that. Their not that hard to get a hold off. I had a sony one that looked just like that in my civic. The only thing is, they are a pain in the *** to install because you can't get a harness for them.

I've seen many pics of later Mazda's with head units that look very similar to the pic, but they all seem to have a "swoopy" design, rather than a squared off design, where the Mini-Disc player would fit (bottom half, between the two large radio buttons). Maybe different markets get different units, but I did recently have a look at units for sale both in the UK and the US (kind of fancied an MD player), and were of the "swoopy" design. I came to the conclusion that the design for the head unit was only put in the FD - haven't seen this squared design in any other Mazda. I admit I could very well be wrong, though!!
But I suppose it doesn't really matter, as long as you're happy with the performance and the look of the unit!
Regarding frequency differences - the main issue you're going to have is with AM where the stepping is different (it goes up in odd increments and so you end up with some US AM stations you can't get the exact frequency on). For FM it's no problem except that the stepping for non-us will likely be in 0.5MHz steps instead of 1MHz steps, which won't be an issue. I brought an Australian Alpine deck over and put in my rx7 when I first came over here and other than the AM frequency-stepping not lining up with stations properly it was fine.
Who listens to AM these days anyhow? (Who listens to the radio these days, anyhow?)

Prob is, this is Spirit R stuff. It could take months, and end up being INCREDIBLY expensive. I may just have to take the hit and get it from Mazda Japan directly
As Andrew said, I'm sure there are subtle differences between the various ones, and if you're like me, it's gotta be exact

sferrett, yea my Sony headunit's like that. But yea no one ever uses AM frequencies, and FM, I actually like the ability to tune in smaller increments. Helps when there's static/interference.

PM me if you're interested, but I hope you have a huge trust fund LOL. Once you say "Mazdaspeed," it's time to break the bank...

Ramy, that head unit is probably the same one used in the US cars, just with different frequencies. I doubt Mazda spent cash to R&D different units for different world markets. Go look at a 2002 Millenia. It's the same head unit. The wiring is probably different, but I'll bet the connectors are the same. My reasoning: Mazda uses a technology called "Modular Audio" and I do know that the early Miata radios would plug right in to a second gen harness. Also, check your PM.

) I'm gonna price this sucker from the stealership using my discount, and let ya guys know how much it lists vs. how much I can get it for...then I'll consider the ebay one.

A regular 6 o'clock cluster like this one (below) runs only a few hundred. ($200 - $300 range, roughly). Oh, and there's a waitlist on such parts, believe it or not LOL.
As for the cluster in the picture on the first page of this thread (see a better pic below), that's a Spirit R cluster. A N Y T H I N G that has the word "Spirit R" attached to it is INCREDIBLY expensive.
I'm not supposed to say anything yet lol, but I actually have a Spirit R cluster on the way. I think it may be the ONLY one in the US, too. I haven't set a price for it yet (gotta factor in domestic shipping in Japan, shipping to the US, Customs fees, taxes, and a fluctuating exchange rate), but DAMN it was expensive. From the get-go, I can tell you I'll be asking a solid grand for it, if not slightly higher - but not a penny less.

A middle option would be to go w/ the Mazdaspeed cluster (see below). I already have that here, and I'm asking $700. These badboys go for a grand new easy, and are extremely rare. In fact, I only know of one other person who had it in the US.
Thanks (and sorry for going off-topic)
