My high end painter is charging $500 just to paint. He attempted to sand and told me that he will have to charge another $1.5K in labor just to strip the paint to the urethane. My sideskirts have four layers to remove: clear, two coats of paint and the primer. So, I ended up purchasing a soda blaster for $300 and I am safely stripping down the sideskirts to the urethane. It will probably take between 3 to 4 hours to strip the paint. I do not anticipate it will take much time to remove the double sided tape. My painter will be using a special flex agent primer and he will add a flex agent to the paint. I will take photos of my progress and may end up posting this project. I am steering clear of the OEM v. fiberglass debate.

There are some threads where people installed authentic OEM skirts without problems. Without the problems gene "had" and me.

And thats why i said apexi is a better buy. Costs about the same, product ONLY, and an easier install. OVerall cost will be cheaper too.
Who the f*ck is arguing? And you know why, bc you think im dismissing the Apexi's
The apexis aren't part of the thread, but guess what sherlock, the OEMs are.
That's what I'm talking about. Not something you brought to the table

I dont care if they are better, worse, or exactly the same. I''m offering a opinion on the OEM and oddly my situation is exactly like Beckrx's.

And if i offer a opinion on the problems i had with my OEM skirts, and there are other documented cases, shouldn't fellow board members be warned sherlock?.

And hey MANG let me add if you know ppl that had success with the fittiment of the oem skirts, then that's *****n great now isnt it?

Happy Xmas btw MANG

I dont care if you dont like apexi's.

I said in my ORIGINAL POST. APEXI IS A BETTER BUY, "I ALSO HEARD OEM SKIRTS ARE HARD TO MAKE PERFECT".

You then said, "and costly as well".

Ok, that just furthers my statement that APEXI IS A BETTER BUY, OEM SKIRTS ARE HARD TO MAKE PERFECT, thus spending more money/time TO MAKE PERFECT.

So if a person who does searches on skirts, shouldnt have the info to go with ANOTHER SKIRT that looks just as good, if not better, for cheaper?? I have the right to inform the forum as well.

Then you wanna ramble about your escapade in getting your skirts done. Spending 1000+ dollars on getting your skirts done doesnt make THOSE skirts a better choice. That just finalizes peoples decisions in NOT going with those skirts. A great skirt? Yes of course but from the forum history, those skirts are a pain to install, moreso if you have replicas. WHich is why i called you out on those many times. Dont believe me, YOU search.

And gene did say HE DID have a problem, then he told me, "idk my dad was the one who put them on". 2 different stories MANG.

Idk, i could have sworn you did tell me when i was about to install my replicas a couple of years ago.

But i guess mooseman got me confused because hes brainwashing us telling us its hard to install.

I bolded your words, QUOTED FOR TRUTH.

Thanks gene for clearing things up.

Trying to decided which one to get. Where can I find a set of Apexi ones? I went to the RX7 Store site and they dont list side skirts on their site.

1dick7 Care to take more of posts and twist them into what you would like to believe?
Pm me your issues with me, my car, or my posts. I'd like to find out why my posts bother you? Clearly you enjoy pissing on my threads. I'd like to quash it and have the goodfella clean this thread up

How far are you gonna drag me into your argument about the Apexi skirts? Kill this here and start a new thread about the Apexis. FYI I had a difficult time with finishing OEM skirts which cost me a lot more than i thought. I object to your post that my skirts are better than anyone elses bc i dropped a lot. I wish i didnt. Thats your assumption. If others were lucky to get it finished cheaper, good for them.

I dont need to do a search on installing OEM skirts since i have personal experience. I didnt know this thread existed untul after I installed mine. I spent two hours installing with a buddy in my garage with urethane and attachment hardware and have not had any issues. Care to call me out on this?

You do realize this is a Mazda OEM part thread? Of course you favor the Apexi's. I dont have a problem with Apexis, they look great but I would even think to compare the two. I even used to have a Apexi front bumper however this year I wanted a OEM look for my car which is why i chose OEM skirts.

So take your beef with me to a pm and leave it off this thread

I dont have beef with you nor your OEM skirts. I think OEM skirts are great, which is why i bought them in the past, then sold them because they are a PITA.

And lol this is not your thread so how am i pissing in your threads? I dont even know you, nor remember any other thread with you in them lol

In anything, i probably said how great your FD looked in the picture thread, thats about it.

But yes i will stop here. I dont even have beef with you lol, i just like my point to be clear. Thats all.

Rob, ill check with Apexi to see if they are still making them. Don't see them too much in Japan, Apexi isn't really popular over there.

Cool

I have the Original Apexi side skirts.
Got them 7 years ago for $400 shipped.
Had them painted and they bolted perfectly, with no warping or fitting issues.
My car is the spoke model for Rotary Performance in the '99 spec parts section.
You can see a good picture of the skirts on my car on the link below.

Some experience with refinishing both FPR and urethane. Both have considerations.
With the OEM it's all in the condition you get them in. You'll find them in "brand-new condition" when Charlie Sheen gives up ****. But too many or too severe of "stretch marks" and it's going to be difficult to keep them from re-appearing over time. And the flex paint additives and fillers for urethane have been around for years.
With FPR you don't have to worry about stretch marks but anyone with an FPR bumper knows it's hard to avoid chips. Probably why MAZDA used urethane. Depending on the quality of the FPR pieces, fitment can sometimes be a challenge since the rigidity of the material isn't as forgiving. There can also be substantial prep time just as with urethane. Block sanding to get the waves out isn't hard but can be tedious.
Boils down to what you like. The only other thing I can think of is insurance considerations. I understand that even now some insurance policies don't play well with aftermarket body pieces. But if you can point to it and tell the adjuster "it's OEM", there are fewer problems.

Just fixed the link, the download now works.

I don't know if you can get the real OEM 99 side skirts new any more. You'd have to try RHDJapan or someone like that.

I'm already having problems with paint flaking off my sideskirts and I've been SUPER careful with them. I may have to get them repainted again, hope I can get them painted better so they're more durable. I've also thought about having them painted then having the 3M protective clear vinyl applied to protect them.

Or getting something else .

Dale

Check Shine's vendor sub forum, replica OEM skirts were made, and it seems like they were considering making them again.

Bitch, moan, cry, anything to get their attention, they seem busy heh.

Dale thanks so much! I guess I should have known that they were going to be a picture book install guide . I wanted to put them on my fd for a racing class BUT they only allow OEM aero parts to be installed. Does anyone know a part number or a picture of a receipt? I only ask as I would have to prove authenticity before inspection.

I was searching for these actually few days ago before installing my feed skirts and no luck. Ended up using stainless screws and double sided tape. If using feed skirts then they do require some working and trimming to fit snug :|

Yeah I shed a tear while drilling the tiny holes into the body :'( . The upside it's underneath the body and only 5 holes required per side. I can snap a picture if you want.
