99 spec side skirt installation instructions - I GOT 'EM!

Download them here -

I got them second hand, as I got my side skirts used. Lots of figuring out to do, but this highlights a LOT of what goes into mounting them.

Hopefully I can figure out what the hell that 6mm stud on the long piece is for :).

Enjoy! I've had a bunch of people PM me for these, so I decided to make a post on it. If anyone has any further insights, please share!

Thanks alot Dale!

Thanks

Dale,

Thanks for the PM as well. My wife is Japanese, but I don't think she would be in the mood to translate all of this. I may have her look at that one piece you mention Dale.

Thanks again,

Charlie

dont buy these skirts....
how do i know? look at the sig.

1QWIK7 12-24-10 05:35 PM

Just get the apexi skirts for a better/cleaner install.

I also heard the 2 pc OEM skirts are hard to make perfect.

huh??

The apexi's are like 40 bucks more.

AUTHENTIC oem skirts are alot of money im sure you know. Unless you have replicas on your car, then yes those can be had for like 300 bucks which i had but sold them because the fitment was crap.

OEM authentic skirts on rx7boutique.com = 615.00 plus shipping

apexi skirts on rx7store.net = 640.00 plus shipping.

The apexi is a better buy generally speaking. 1pc unit, easier to install. Flows great with the car as well, and in most cases, better than OEM depending on wheel choice.

Lets not forget that the 99 oem sideskirts are made of URETHANE, which is flexible and much, much better quality than the fiberglass in the Apexi or aftermarket side skirts. I am not personally a huge fan of either to be honest, but if it was me I would take OEM quality and the urethane material. Just my .02.

Add 40 hours of labor to that to get them refinished.
My neighbor did mine which cost me $800+
Dont believe me? Go buy em. Save the whopping $25.
Unless you have a close freind that does body work and he owes you a huge favor

purerx7 12-25-10 11:30 AM

Did you get the replica set? I have sold many oem sets, they all have fit with zero problems (or at least that is the feedback from my customers) and won't cost more than $200 to paint and prep.

moosejaw 12-25-10 11:41 AM

i have to disagree with ya B
The OEM peice is indeed urethane but is flimsy and has the structural integrity of a pool noodle
Since we all buy the used ones, they have many cracks in them. Most body shops didnt want to paint mine, so i went to my neighbor who is a body man for the many exotic car places down here.
The bulk of the cost came in the refinishing of the product which was painful. The skirts were painted off the car using a new flex agent that he came across.

The skirts look nice tho even thought to put them on it cost well over $1200.

Wait which set are you talking about, OEM or apexi??

From this post, it looks like you're referring to a replica set, WHICH I HAD, but like you said, has problems and thats why i sold it. Because you are right, will cost alot more money and time to get the perfect fit. TALKING ABOUT OEM.

Thats why i said either apexi is a much better buy because its bolt on, considering both skirts have to be painted, the apexi is an easier install.

Gene (rx7rage) has authentic OEM and didnt have a problem with install.

Pianoprodigy had apexi skirts and didnt have problem with install.

Seems like you have a replica set mang.

Nope, your wrong I have OEM and did gene tell you he didnt have problems with it?

Gene was at my house last month and we both had the same skirt when we both bought it and both of us agree that FINISHING (not what you call install) was a PITA.

I believe the used OEM side skirt is not meant to come back off the car. And when they do, they start to crack, flex, and break. That's where you will spend the money

Im not a body guy, but the skirts had to be done three times over. It may have been easier if it was on the car, but i didnt want to leave my car at a shop.

Buy it then if youre still not convinced.
I told you my story and its just my experience.
I would have kept my CF skirts if i had known.

RX7 RAGE 12-25-10 01:52 PM

I need to repaint my skirts too. :( I hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to do so.

So why contradict yourself then when i said.

Because brian said

That would mean

The APEXI ARE A BETTER BUY WITH BETTER FITMENT. And in YOUR WORDS, cheaper since OEM you need more labor time.

moosejaw 12-25-10 04:14 PM

No dude............
I said they were more costly as well to a reply to your post to get the Apexis.

And Gene didnt have any issues fitting them bc he didnt paint them.
I dont give a rats ass about the Apexis, you brought those up.

Im offering a opinion on the OEM Side Skirts, not Apexi, and not ones made by the hamburgular.

So crawl back up these posts and show me where in this thread i offered a opinion on the Apexi vs OEM debate. If not
please go crawl up someone elses a**

1QWIK7 12-25-10 05:24 PM

So what are you arguing then?

I never said OEM was NOT hard to install. I even said i had a hard time installing mine and that was the reason why i sold them.

There are some threads where people installed authentic OEM skirts without problems. Without the problems gene "had" and me.

And thats why i said apexi is a better buy. Costs about the same, product ONLY, and an easier install. OVerall cost will be cheaper too.
