99 spec fans into '93, how tos?

Hi Folks,

Have done a number of searches and can find a lot of information on people who say they have installed the series 8 (99 spec) fans, could see people talking about a number of how-tos as well but I couldn't find any.

Long story short, I have a dead thermo fan in my '93 JDM FD. I have a mate who wrote off his RS (99 spec) not long ago and I picked up the fans from that. Fans are in good condition.

I know the shroud with fans and motors attached will bolt in with no worries, not worried about that, but the plugs are different.

The wire colours are the same between the '93 fans and the '99 fans, is it safe to assume the wires do the same things and I simply need to replace the '99 spec plug with the '93 spec plug and it will all work OK?

Otherwise, if someone knows of a how-to, please direct me to it

Cheers

You can probably use a small toothpick like tool and move the plugs from each harness end without ruining them and just swap the plugs.

Thanks for that. I guess you're saying the wires are all the same between 93 and 99 spec then and I don't need to go hunting down a 99 spec wiring diagram?

err... I think you do. The mod that you are talking about is where people take the 99spec fan BLADES and mount them to the stock fans. For that, you need to make a shim.

Sorry, I just read over my original post again, I wasn't very clear with it

I need to move the whole 99 spec fans, motor, shroud etc into my 93 because one of my 93 fan motors is dead. The only difference then is the plugs and i'm trying to determine if the wires are different I don't see any point in just changing motors etc when the shroud etc just bolts on

Thanks for bringing it back up. I took a punt and went colour for colour when I put it in - all seemed to work OK.

I used the fan-side plug on my '93 fans and soldered them colour for colour onto the fan-side wiring of the '99 fans so I wasn't cutting into my original loom.

I wouldn't reccomend doing it without some more investigation into weather the colours mean they ARE the same, I was in a bind so I soldered up one fan and tested it with the AC on before continuing onto the second fan, it worked full speed so I took a punt because it seemed to work but I didn't do any major investigation into weather it was right I was working against the advice of an auto electrician, though he did say the chances of the functions of the wires changing with the colour was slim - but he suggested checking properly first and I would suggest the same.

Other than the wiring it all bolted up perfectly.

None to speak of, I swapped to the series 8 fans about two weeks after putting in a Koyo N-Flow, so didn't have any data to go off.

OK, I'm jealous . Looks like the connectors for the fan motors are different too.

Connectors are different. Mine came with the other end of the connector so it was easier to swap.
