97 Japanese FD Rotisseire Style.

Thought I would share...My boss heads over to Japan quite a bit for business and one of the guys who shows him around drives a 97 FD...well, the cool thing is the place he parks it...It's stacked about 99 cars high...You head down to the garage and punch in your number and it delivers you car to you on a totisseire type platter...

My boss didn't realise how cool it was to go to Japan and get shown around in an FD...He came back and said..."Hey, last week I got show around Tokyo in a car like yours" Then he told me about the way they had them parked, stacked, and rotated...As soon as he said that I asked if he took pics...nope...so I had the dude e-mail a few photos.

What if it dropped your car? I doubt anything dropped from something that high would be salvagable.

Oil, & Droppage seem to be handeled with the fact that it's solid, metal/plastic, and has wheel chalks that come up, when it moves, but what if you have an SUV that's 2X as tall ?? Do you have to buy two spaces !?

They dont have things like that in the US because we arent cramped for space. They have the whole population of america living in an island thats a bit bigger than florida. They cant build out so they build up

Looks like a great idea for cities with limited space/parking such as SF.

I wonder what the annual cost is for a space?

Its pretty common in Japan. Space is a luxury in many places, especially in the city. A lot of the apartment complexes have those style lifts, but usually no more than 5 or so high.

I bet those things are good for preventing theft too. Can you imagine trying to steal something that's 100 cars up in the air on the lift? You would have to be able to break into the parking garage mechanism, then steal the car. Not that Japan has much theft....

What if someone else pushes your number and your car comes down for them?

They dont have your car keys, so it would be the same thing as someone here walking next to your car.

True, but it would save on alot of room in larger citys. Can't go wrong with to much space in large citys!!

I think that was in response to POS7 saying it would be theft proof.

There's probably a pin # for each space thats assigned to you, and reset for when there's a new person that gets assigned that spot. You'd have to get ahold of that to get the car down. I'm just assuming here though. If thats not the case, it'd be nice to have.

That's what I was assuming. I could be wrong though. Again, theft isn't that big of a problem in Japan.

I hope what you didn't mean to insinuate was that this parking deck concept came to be because of i-Robot...

They have similar parking to this in NYC -- a friend of mine drove the two of us out to NYC for a Auto Show a couple years back and the parking lot we parked in had something similar, but it was only about 6 cars high!
