'97 fresh air duct

Sorry this may have been discussed already in the past but I couldn't find any thread by searching under "air duct" or "fresh air"

Mazdaspeed sells a '97 RX7 (JAPAN-MARKET) fresh air duct (part no. N3F1-13-201)

Would this work with the '93 air box and where does the '97 duct take the air from?

Thanks,

Sandro

This item is not much different that our markets earlier version. Air is still taken from the IC ducting. I purchased one years ago just on hope that it was different; it is not until the '99 version that air is drawn from the front end through the license plate frame, but I have not found any of these ducting parts for sale.

Very definitive answer.

Thanks Julian

Adam,

I do use your Cheap Bastard airbox modification.

At the time I got the '96 version airduct, I was hoping it increase flow even more and blend ram air from a source higher of the road surface as i was running a West Texas closed highway 120 mile run; where air temps were above 100 F and air temp a foot above road surface (intake bottom feed air) was over 120 F.

That's what I have as well.

However, I installed two small SPAL pushing fans inside the I/C duct and had to close the hole from the duct to the air pipe. Adam has been recommending to keep that path open for best performance of his intake design. That's why I was looking for an alternate path of fresh air.

I since "solved" the problem by opening the air box further, cutting most of the side facing the right fender. I put plenty of foam between the air box and the fender (behind the new opening), and between the other side of the box and the radiator (by basically extending the top of the aluminum sheet barrier) to minimize suction of hot air. The air pipe now only acts as a barrier from the top of the radiator. I also wrapped the bottom of the I/C duct with with insulation and reflective tape (note the radiator fans are on at full speed during my autox runs).

With such arrangement, now my air intake generally stays below 60 deg C (with stock I/C and stock twins at 13 psi).
