93 speedo in 99 spec cluster?

So I'm getting a 99 spec cluster from Japan for a decent price. The speedo supposedly doesn't work. Can I replace it with my existing 93 FD speedo?

I thought some people can take the 99 spec tach and put it into a 93 cluster?

You can pull the speedometer needle and swap the face. Just remember to calibrate it.

You can also just unbolt the whole speedo unit and bolt it into the new cluster. Super easy, just a few screws.

If your speedo works fine and odometer works fine, I would just swap the whole thing over. Only downside is it won't have the green illumination.

Actually I would swapping the green bulbs for amber/red LEDs. I prefer to keep my original speedo. Only downside is the font is not italics. Oh what a bummer haha.
My dad had th temperature gauge setup linear. So I would lose that and gain a second boost gauge?

Amber/red bulbs won't work for the green tinted 99 cluster. It will be super dim.

The actual gauge face is what gives it the color. The bulbs are just regular white bulbs, the gauge face has tint behind the numbers that gives the color.

If you wanted your speedometer mechanism with the 99 face, you'd have to swap the face. That involves pulling the needle, which is tricky at best.

Ahh yeah thanks. Hmm so I would have to pull the face off the tach. Yikes. No thank you.

Is there any reason attempting to pull the speedo unit out of the 99 cluster make it not work when you reverse your steps?

My friend messages the previous owner. He didn't try to pull the needle. He just attempted to remove the speedometer. Put the screws back and it stopped working. So he says.

The speedo unit is just held in (and makes an electrical contact with) a handful of screws. There's also a ribbon cable going to it, but I think that's just for the odometer.

Hell, I'd check all the connections, maybe pull and reinstall it, and see if it works.

If it does, you can do my mod to convert the speedo to MPH and swap your odometer chip over.

I chickened out. I ended up just swapping the tachs.

Here is the before pic.

Here are the backs of the tachs. You can see why they glow amber vs green.
