93-ON Automatic Hold Feature?
Hi All,
Can someone explain this feature. I have searched but recieve more about other generations. I suppose it allows you to hold revs up for better shifts with an automatic rx7.
If someone could explain it, its effectiveness, and how you actually use (ie. there is a button you press to stop car from shifting on its own until you are satisfied with rev) or is it like trip-tronic where you have to do something else.
Thank you.

I did a search. As I saw, those do not explain how to USE the hold button. They tell you the ongoing debate between auto vs manual, which I have read, and if I end up agreeing with the Manual drivers, I will simply swap the transmission.
So the method of USING the hold function. How it works, how you activate or deactivate it.
Thank you.

Constant threat
Look at your shifter console. You will see two sets of letters/numbers. One indicates the gear that will be selected with HOLD on, the other with it off. For example, 'L' is 1st gear with hold on, but the car will shift into 2nd gear very quickly (and thus some of the 'dogginess' people have witnessed with automatic trannies, not realizing the car was simply trying to go from 2nd gear rather than first) with HOLD off.
In 'S', the car will stay in 2nd gear with HOLD on, and shift from 2nd to 3rd with HOLD off. In 'D', the car will stay in 3rd gear with HOLD on, and go into overdrive with HOLD off.
You also get full torque converter lock-up with HOLD on. Basically it "holds" it in that gear. (if you leave HOLD on in 'D', the car won't shift lower than 2nd gear) Want a primitive form of traction control in say, an unexpected snow storm? Put the car in 'D' and push the HOLD on. It will really limit your acceleration.....lol!
A skilled driver used to using the HOLD properly will give a manual car fits, frankly.
There IS a little less acceleration simply due to the rear end final drive ratio differences, but the taller gear used in the autos coupled with the constant boost means that in every single category EXCEPT for the initial launch, the auto can be as fast if not faster than a manual in the hands of an expert. Most people don't ever play with it enough to become expert. I feel I have. Once you really understand how it all works, you can wring top performance from the car.
