Saving gas with an FD is pretty much a lost cause. a few things like tuning can improve mpg's but it will be very difficult to pay off the investment. Different gearing is not going to make a big difference regardless of price.

IMO, trying to make an FD into a daily driver is a very expensive proposition. The upkeep per mile (not including gas) is much higher than other cars, plus the fuel economy issue. It's much better to have two cars, a daily that doesn't drink fuel and money, and the FD. Then you have flexibility and a more stable financial situation.

Stop over thinking it, and leave it alone.
as i had said earlier i had hoped the v160/v161 would have had a taller 6th than the fd 5th. now i realize the v160 actually has a shorter 6th gear. however i do feel it would increase (imo) the cool factor (i really like 6 speeds). now other than cost, and pain-in-the-***-ness are there any other problems with a v 160 swap (when done correctly)? if i did do the swap and later decided to do a 20b (and im well aware of the cost, so dont lecture me) swap would i have to further modify the tranny swap? or would it be the same as a 20b swap into a stock fd?

i like the 6 speed idea as much as the next guy but it doesn't make sense to me to get one and have an extra gear where we dont need it.

it would be nice to have one with the first 4 gears the same as a factory FD and adding a taller fifth of .850 or similar and then sixth could be the usdm 5th of .719. i think something like this would be nice. the gears on a fd are short enough from the factory and then when close to stock they fall on there face when 5th is engaged. the only logical way i see to use the 160 or 161 is to change the rear end gears to 3.73 or 3.90's at the largest so 1-4 aren't outragously short so we can get to our 1:1 5th gear. not really worth it i don't think. my .02

I wonder what the cost difference of going through the process of fitting a 6spd tranny versus just getting a straight cut transmission like the ones HKS sells (I'm not sure if they make an application for FDs though)

Sell your car please. FD is not a car you get for great mileage..

The v-160 has a flange on the rear and any driveshaft shop can make you a new driveshaft.

T-56 is a 4 speed with two overdrive gears.
V-160 is a close ratio 5-speed with a granny 1st.
V-161 shouldn't even be mentioned because it is near impossible to source.

i did a thread a while back and talked to someone who had a 6speed in the fd. I had bought a T56 6 speed tranny from a 04 pontiac gT0 minimal fitment problems. would of gone with the rx8 tranny but heard alot of problems with the gearbox so got the gt0 tranny for $1300 with 20k mileage. and holds power pretty good

Wrong, V160 and V161 are both 6 speeds. A similar version of the V160 was used with a 4wd transfer case in the R34 GT-R.

The V161 just has different gearing/final drive for better acceleration and pickup but sacrifices top speed. The V161 was introduced to J-Spec Supras in 1996-2002 and i HEARD that it's gearing better matches the 2jz-gte VVTi.

There are 5 and 6 speed T-56s as well.

The R154 is a 5 speed and the 5 speeds we saw here with the 2jz motors are the W55/W58
