Sounds reasonable but people still put Turbos in Rx8's and get close to 500hp and they don't have many tranny options do they?.. What about the 7's 5 speed, do they not brake ever ? I'm sure I can bolt up a 5 speed in my ride if needed fairly easy, anyone know if the 8's and the 7's trannies have the same spline pattern for the driveshaft yoke ?

JPR Imports has put a few Fd trans in rx8s in the last few months because the rx8 box is really a Miata box and they break.
JPR Imports has to modify the shifter to the front..

By my calculations, the fifth gear at .64 would run at approximately 2,050 rpm at 60 mph.

Well like I stated and a few of you guys can see from my webalbum pics lol, I have already a working 6 speed in my STARX8 PROJECT. So simplicity wise that is how I will go from now with the FD I am about to drop in there, well am in the process of it I just have to acquire about $1500 worth of more parts to get it right before I fire it up. It will work, now how long it will last that's another thing.. But I can go to stock 5 speed for the FD if the 6 speed brakes, that will be the easiest and cheapest way to go, I will keep the Rx8 LSD and carbon fiber driveshaft I doubt that will be a problem. A T56 conversion sounds expensive given everything I've done so far, yeah their bulletproof so it might be a nice alternative to having a 6 speed, which I have grown very fond off.. Rough estimate for a T56 tranny and bellhousing adapter plates, like 3 grand ? a 5 speed FD $300 lol, a 6 speed (which I already have 700-1300).. Thank you for being clear and thorough in my questions.. Since we're in the subject of trannies, I have a 93 FD auto tranny I got with my engine with only 10k miles as stated in the ebay auction I bought the engine from that has been stored and primed with oil since 94, I am selling the auto for $400 if anyones interested..

If it is your prerogative to drop in an RX8 transmission into your FD, then so be it. With my personal experience (and many others), I like doing things right and done once. I do not want to have another variable that could leave me stranded on the side of the road. If there is a probability of that, then I will obviously go with a method that is tried and true. It will be more cost effective, less frustration and less time spent redoing something: that is an undisputable fact.

^ Guys, VICEdOUT does not have a FD. He has a custom project that already has the RX8 trans installed. Click the link in his sig. It would be easy to swap in the REW.
VICEdOUT, swap in the REW motor and see what happens. If the trans blows up then you have your answer. If it works then you save a lot of time and money.

Well reading on a search I found that all turbo trannies have the same size shaft splines and also the Rx8 uses the turbo Rx7's shaft with same size splines but the non turbo Rx7's have a smaller size shaft splines.. So the 8's driveshaft will fit with a 7's tranny, I think they are the same lenght.. All found here in this Racing Beat link:
Rotary Tech Tips: Transmissions
Didn't mean to confuse anybody or mislead, I just mean FD engine when I say FD, not the 93 and up Rx7 car itself.. I have an 89 STARQUEST

I've been thinking more of 6 speeds over the last few months when I DD the FD. Would be nice to have some closer gearing 3-4-5 and an overdrive 6th gear.
The T56 trans out of the GMs and the T56 from the new Mustang are a known quantity. The Mustang version seems to have improvements resulting in better shift feel. Still not as good as the stock trans or a Miata or Honda though...
However for my power levels, I don't need something as 'strong' as the T56. Every now and then I think about the 6 speed from the 350Z and contemplate things...

Anyone know any other clutch slave cylinders that will work with the 6 speed on the FD swap? Since the Rx8 cylinder is too long and hits the 7's engine oil filter.. There has to be an easy swap to a shorter different slave cylinder that matches the bolt patters of the 8's tranny and does not hit the oil filter on the FD.. I will have to mix and match slave cylinders until I find the right fit if no one knows of one already..

i used to have pictures of the insides of the Rx8 trans vs the FD/turbo FC, and the Rx8's hard parts are larger.
there is another option, the 2009-2012 Rx8's had a completely different transmission that is much more robust.

^^^ Thanks for that part number and clutch slave cylinder info, I will def try that one if the one I decided to go with doesn't hold up the pressure, (stock pressure plate for the moment but next one will be a Red Stage pressure plate from Clutchnet.com) I went with a clutch slave cylinder from a 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.4L that fits with a little drilling of the two holes and angled up spacing it with washers lol it also utilizes the 8's cylinder rod..
I have also bought me a SYNCRO SAVER so there will be absolutely NO hard, over pushed shifts and I will shift with confidence and care and we shall see just how good and long the 6 speed tranny lasts for...

given the title of the thread i just couldn't resist... love the Hurst shifter ball on my T56 FD.
maybe i love the close ratios even more especially the 2.66 first.
four years of happy shifting.
