IMO I dont think it will. They placed the Renesis engine farther back and lower on the chassis so that means the trans is lower and farther back as well. However, it might work you never know untill someone gets ahold of one, also do you really want to? the gearing will be set up differently, and might not be optimal for the 13BREW.

with some custom mounts, maybe some custom cutting blah blah, it might fit.

toddp31 04-12-03 11:21 PM

I don't really want one, just curious. It would be alot of work there is no question. Someone thought of putting a 3 rotor in a (fd, fc) and know that is way more work than a tranny swap.

BicuspiD 04-12-03 11:57 PM

Quaife makes a 6-speed gearset for the FD3S transmission, but for some reason it only works on Japanese spec transmissions. Kinda pricey too..

Straight cut, close ratio gears
Latest 4 dog open-face design
Comprehensive kit - includes selectors
Requires minor modifications to center and rear cases

hmm anything in the tranny is pricy...

but.. i think thats pretty worth it. why only in j-spec Tranny's ... is it possible to swap a J-spec tranny in a us-spec Rx-7

RX-8 04-13-03 12:40 AM

Apparently the Rx-8 tranny is the same as the six speed miata tranny if anyone knows if that will work with an fd than the rx-8 one might work.

skunks 04-13-03 07:28 AM

where is that guy that was making that adaptor plate for a T56 to mate up with a stock fd engine?

nless7 04-13-03 08:40 AM

Miata tranny will not bolt up to an FD3s. I own both and have an extra tranny for both laying in my garage.
Anybody know why the 6speed kit only works for j-spec?

Trout2 04-13-03 01:34 PM

Yes, why only a J-spec tranny? Never heard of any differences in the transmissions.

Dog tranny's are the shit, I'd give my left nut to have a 4 speed NASCAR style one in my car.

Street King 04-13-03 02:56 PM

Too noisy for the street and you have to rev match everything. Only good for race applications.

apneablue 04-13-03 03:09 PM

I think I read somewhere on here about them mating a Viper 6spd tranny to the FD...not sure though. It seemed like it was around 6k.

JimmyJimboJet 04-13-03 03:23 PM

i didn't think you had to match revs w/ a dog-style transmission?

bigmack000 04-13-03 03:43 PM

i asked htsi question a few weeks ago no one answered. does hks have a 6sp for the rx7.

They dont call them crash box's for nothing, if you dont rev match perfectly, you'll grind the gears very fast. On the good side, i hear that you will learn really fast on how to do this (either that or get a new tranny asap :D)

BTW: they must be rebuilt about once a year or so...

yes they do but I "believe" it costs 7-10k and is a sequential transmission..

toddp31 04-13-03 06:42 PM

I know Alf (soul assassin) had a hks dog mission in his Fc before he left here. It made alot of noice at idle, but well worth the money. I remember him saying he paid 10k.

bigmack000 04-13-03 06:45 PM

better sell a kidney for one of the trannys from hks. lol thats is alot of coin.

I have read that this is the RX-8 6 speed is the same as that is in the Miata, S15 Silvia and European market Lexus IS200.

I believe the Silvia guys have had durability problems in just the few years it has been out. So, apparantly the transmission is not very good for turbo torque anyways.

Hopefully the trans will benifit from continuous improvements since it has so many applications- not that RX-8 or Miata need durable transmissions since they have no torque.

Munchy2000 04-13-03 11:11 PM

Wasn't there something about an adapter to fit Viper 6 speed transmission on an FD?

Read that somewhere on the boards...

toddp31 04-14-03 12:09 AM

Someone will try it soon enough, then we will know for sure.

The problem with the S15 6 speed tranny is that the housing is the same size as the previous generation (S14) which only had five gears. So that means that the gears are thinner and therefore more brittle in the S15 6 speed tranny.

...at least that's what I've heard

SpiritR 04-14-03 07:56 AM

Trust, OS Geiken, HKS and some others all make 6 speeds and crossmissions

Mazda RX7 Turbo 6 speed dog engagement $6,495.00

This kit is only avalible through Trust of Japan and if you go to Trust's Japanese's site and under the name of GREX. I was looking into that a few years ago when I saw such ad on a Japanese car mag. It is very expensive but I think it it well worth it, better than changing to singe turbo. But this is just me, maybe is because I have driven a S2K and fell in love with the 6 speed trandy.

Crackers 04-15-03 12:14 PM

if you go to quaifeusa.com it is listed on there website

I have never heard of Trust selling it or Grex.

I think the going used price for one of these is around 1200-1500. Mating it to the rotary might be kinda tough. I don't know if there is anything off the shelf that would work.
The Viper transmission has a steel 3-4 shift fork and a larger output shaft, but for all intents and purposes (with the exception of the Viper logo cast into the housing near the shifter) it's the same as the Borg Warner (now Tremec) T56s used by the Camaro, Firebird, and T56 transaxles used by the LS1 Corvettes. They're all built like the proverbial brick shit-house. :)

That said, the T56 is also substantially shorter than the Mazda 5-speed (as you can see in the pictures below comparing a 5-speed I had laying around to an LT1 T56) and matching the shifter to the opening in the floor pan would be difficult without some sort of spacer, and that presents its own problems.

The LS1 version has a slightly longer (about 1.25") input shaft than the T56 version and a deeper bellhousing as a result, but it would still come short of the shifter opening. Even behind an LT1 which positions the transmission farther back in the chassis, you can see that the T56 shifter location is towards the front of the opening (3rd picture below).
