5th Gear syncro
5th Gear syncro
Im just wandering if I need to replace it right away. Is it going to get worse? or cause further damage? It grinds every time it goes to 5th if you try to work it in slowly it's not so bad sometimes.
Eventually you will not even be able to ease it in and it will grind consistantly. At that point I would definatly consider changing the synchro or trans as they have the potential to damage nearby 3rd and reverse if I remember correctly.
Personally, I went the used JDM trans route after I blew my synchro and I enjoy it with no problems. Hope this helps.

If it's beaten up badly enough, it may come loose from where it's supposed to be and mangle some more parts.
If you always double-clutch or make nice careful shifts into 5th, it won't put much stress on the synchro and you can make it last a pretty long time. That's assuming it stays put.

You can go a couple different ways:
1. Buy a new transmission >_<
2. Have a shop rebuild your 5th gear synchro
3. Buy a used JDM transmission
The thing is it depend on if you do the work or not on which route I would go. If you have the means and knowhow to drop and open the trans, then thats the most cost effective way (not including your time) since a synchro is only a couple bucks. If your in there you may as well do them all.
For the transmission internals layman like myself, I contacted a local used trans shop and got the JDM trans with 35k + for $400 and installed it. Easy-peezy-japanesey.
Last but not least, buy a new one. I highly recommend against this though $$$$

Do a search for the how-to. The biggest job is just pullng the transmission, once out, it's not that bad, or you could just take it to a shop. And the synchro itself isn't expensive, if your transmission is otherwise sound, why go to the expense of buying another (maybe of questionable quality)?
FWIW, mine just had the normal grind to it, but when I went to pull it off, it fell into two pieces. I wouldn't wait TOO long.

Replace it ASAP...don't get caught up in my situation I had a year ago (see link below). However, now...she's nice n' dandy and smooth and practially brand new! ^_^

P.S. ...the part i talk about the "rattling" end up just being a chipped gear...which was also replaced. It wasn't a loose piece physicaly broken off...whew!

sgtblue was it you that did one of the write-ups on that syncro replacement..?
just curious..judgeing from your statement youve either done it or helped someone else do it.
big question could it be done in a week? i have a couple contacts in jap town that i can get a tranny for a pretty good deal im sure but i cant pass up the chance to gain knowledge on how to better service my car..
. ive skimmed thru most all of the write ups and i kinda understand the basics im more hands on then most so i learn better when im up to my elbows in grease reading from the pub. lol.

Mine was broken for 6 years so unless you're speed shifting into 5th you can live with a long while with no problem. Even after that 4th and 5th gear showed hardly any signs of wear. Just let the rpms fall and it wont even grind.
