5th gear shift select - upgrade w/tranny in car?
Hey all -
One thing I've wondered - I know Mazda released some new parts to help prevent the 5th gear mis-shift, namely a stiffer shift select spring. Does anyone know if it would be possible to install that part with the tranny in the car? I know on the TurboII tranny there are some springs that control shifter movement that are easy to access and replace with the tranny still installed.
Anyhow, if this was the case, it would probably be a good idea to do if you have a good 5th gear synchro - that would hopefully prevent mis-shifts and prolong the life of the synchro.
Thoughts?

I did mine but it was out of the car for other work... From memory, I'd say that you CAN do it without removing anything except maybe the main cat and/or the tranny undertray if they are in your way (don't think the cat is...)

I figured you'd have to maybe remove the cat, but definitely the trays. Even if you have to remove the driveshaft, that would be a pretty easy job.
Replacing it, is there like a small cover or something on the side that you remove and the spring comes out? The TII tranny has a threaded bolt that's hollow - the spring sits inside the bolt, and you screw the assembly in. I know the TII and 3rd gen trannies are VERY similar, just not sure how similar .
I would like to tackle replacing the 5th gear synchro at some point - I've only messed with trannies a little and I'd like the challenge . My new neighbor has an FD that needs a lot of TLC, and we'll probably tackle the synchro at some point in time.
Has anyone ever done a pictorial documentation of the process? Whenever I do it, I do plan on fully documenting it, just wondering if someone's beaten me to the punch .
Thanks!

Found what I was looking for, took some serious diggin' -

Go there, then go into the Mail Attachments folder. Within is a ~3 meg Word document written by Jeff Ho - has nice pics and everything of the whole process.
From the pictures, it looks to be EXTREMELY easy to change the shift select spindle with the tranny in the car. It looks to be on the driver's side very back of the transmission, and it's held in with 2 10mm bolts.
Overall, the whole process to change the 5th gear synchro doesn't look too bad. Biggest thing is to take your time on disassembly, and label and document each part you take off for proper re-installation. Only real tricky part is the long-jaw pullers, and that looks to be relatively simple to make.
