550 cc injectors need to be replaced

Hey,

I am replacing my primary inj. soon, and I am wondering if you guys just stick with stock or go with an aftermarket brand. I have thought about going bigger, but since I am still running the stock twins and have crappy gas here in CA, there really isn't much of a point.

Also if someone could point me a good direction for a good price.

Thanks,

Ian

Are you replacing them for some reason? If they are just old, you can send them to RC Engineering to be cleaned and flow balanced.

As far as larger ones, you won't be able to use larger injectors with the Pettit ECU (without some other piggy back addon that is).

^ yea i know about the ecu. But I have already decided to not go with larger primaries. I will still get the ecu and go larger on the secondaries.

the reason for the replacement is that its that time. they are stock injectors w/ 75k mi. on them. they will soon go out and dont want to risk fuel leak/ fire, or on the extreme side complete failure/ fuel loss/ blown motor.

Thanks for the suggestion to balance/ cleaned, but I have always heard that I might as well just replace them. I know its cheaper just to clean them but I have been told its not that great.

They will not go out just because of the milage. They are not cheap Bosch units. Have them tested at RC Eng' and they will tell you if they are good by the resistance, I beleive. If they are way off then they are on the way out but if it's close then they are good. The 850's retail for about $400 each. I'm not sure what the 550's list for. Have them cleaned and replace the FPD. If you are really itching to spend money, replace the fuel lines and vacuum lines with new kits (which include check valves).

lol, im not "itching" to spend money but i figured that these injectors dont last forever. whats the ave. life? when are you supposed to replace them, when you start smelling fuel? i dont want to pull them, pay RC to look at them, then have to order new ones.

I asked RC-Eng' if they knew the lifespan and the tech told him he could only tell by checking the resistance or whatever. I haven't read of anyones OEM ($400ea) injectors failing on this board. I've read of the Bosch ($100ea) having a short life span but that's just hearsay and I have no first hand experience using them.

You will need to pull them to check them, to clean them, to replace them. A fuel smell could be the (FPD) fuel pulsation damper (lots of threads on it's failure) or maybe even a bad hose, especially if you have a '93. There is a fuel hose replacement kit and a Vacuum hose replacement kit (includes check valves) available.

Oh, it's $25ea to clean them and includes new o-rings that the dealer charges $15/pair for. I dropped off some 850's that I bought on ebay and was told they were destroyed and they did not charge me. He even gave me a new screen free for my 550 that I broke.

hey thanks for the input goracer! did you ever finishg your IC project? do you still need help?

that sounds really cheap to pull clean those injectors. i have already replaced my fpd, so I am not worried about that. I thought injectors can go out. i thought the primaries start to leak after a while. can anyone cnfm this?

Mahjik where r u? where's my 50 links? =)

No, haven't finished my car yet. Hopefully this weekend ...maybe.

If yours test bad and you can't find good used ones, then Gotham has some good prices. I'm not sure why they are different colors though. Maybe they are not Mazda OEM? Anyhow, they shouldn't fail if not overheated (pushed beyond 85%). Cleaning should prevent them from sticking to. I have about 300k mi' on my CRX on original injectors. If anyone wants to reply with their failure experence, please do so. Supposedly side injectors run cooler then top feed. Again, i'm just repeating what i've read so feel free to contridict me if you have first hand knowledge to the contrary.

I agree with Mahjik and GoRacer -- just get them cleaned and flow tested (RC). The injectors are not likely to fail any time soon, but I am sure they could use a good cleaning.

Find the spec'd resistance (should be in the FSM) and check it with a meter. You can do that without even pulling them out of the rail.

I have a set of 550cc's that were just cleaned and flow balanced by RC Engineering. I bought them from Fritz Flynn a while ago and never used them.

I paid $135 shipped. Make me an offer if you want them...
