Smile 5 speed overhaul

I realize this is the advanced section so the how to questions may need not apply here however I do have a lot of auto experience (20 years drive-ability) so I was thinking of going into my transmission at some time to change out the barrings along with the syncros. I have a week second and third up shift conduction but its find going down. I am sure there are a few special tools needed but can you get by with a little craftiness??? I also wonder about the prices on the barrings and syncros. Thoughts on the project appreciated. John St. John

You can probably get a used lower milage transmission for a lot less, but I don't know what I'm talking about because I haven't seen prices on new transmission parts.

I have seen some transmissions and the cost is under 500 so its reasonable. The idea of the labor is fine but not doing it multiple times. If this were a Muncie trans or a Saginaw old school it would be a different story, labor and cost. We all know most all services on the FD can be involved just getting to the part. John St. John

if you're buying factory bearings and synchros, the parts alone are $1000+, and then you need to replace the stuff thats bad, ie hubs, gears etc.

I wouldn't think of spending more than 1K on it. I might look around for some aftermarket barrings. It seems to me its likely made with odd one off barrings but you never know until you check in to the sizes. Maybe a used one is the best idea. I don't need it now and am easy on the car overall. I got this car with a bad motor and 53k on it. The previous owner lived in Beverly Hills and likely hammered the transmission/car quite a bit.
