OK, the FD3S.net domain has been officially transferred to me. Dan is going to send me his content too.
I also talked to Max about merging with his site. I will let you know what he says...
I think the next steps are:
1. Figure out the hosting option. It looks like we got a couple of offers in this thread, but I haven't had time to follow up on those (space, bandwidth, cost (hopefully none), etc.
2. Figure out how to split the content duties up. I can burn CDs and snail mail, ith the existing site, and the directory full of stuff we need to update / integrate with the existing pages.
3. Add more diagrams and clean up the existing pages so instead of a collection of postings we have nice clean pages that summarize all of the old posts.
I am thinking that the best way to address points 2 and 3 above would be to get volunteers for each main section on the site. Right now it is organized into two main sections:
- Upgrades (which parts are good, how to pick them, etc.)
- How-to (how to install once you have selected parts)
then it is broken down into bigger categories under each of those, e.g.- drivetrain, suspension, etc. I think that is the level at which we need to assign owners.
Let me know your thoughts...
Cheers,
Steve

I have a 1 and 1 hosting available. I got in it when it was free. I think it's still good for at least another 2 years (I think it was 3 years total).
I still want to keep ownership and access to the webspace, however it can be used however you choose. I will not change, add or delete anything.
Here's what it has:
---------------------------
What are the features of the free professional Hosting Package?
The following are the features:
Package Features:
Linux Server
500 MB web space
5 GB/month bandwidth
5 FTP accounts
50 subdomains
SSH Secure Shell Access
Cron Jobs
1 MySQL database
PHP4
FrontPage 2002 Extensions
Ready-to-run CGI scripts
Free CGIs
SSI Server Side Includes
Performance Features:
WebsiteCreator with 12 pages
1&1 Chat
In2site Live Dialogue
WebStatistics
WebElements
WebDatabase
Newsletter Tool
Access to log files
E-mail Features:
50 POP3 e-mail accounts with 50 MB space each
1&1 WebMail
E-mail forwarding
Auto-responders
Catch-all e-mail addresses

I also picked up Dan Mazzella's "FD3s.net" web site and domain, so I think that is a better address for us than "http://www.ScuderiaCiriani.com/rx7".
Once that transfer goes through (and it looks like it just did), I will move to a new hosting provider and put up the Lightning content there, and do a redirect from the old URL.
The hosting is about $5 a month at 1and1.com. I don't want to accept advertising, as that would limit us in terms of what we could say, force us not to offend anyone, etc. Not that I want to offend anyone
but I do want to be able to post honest feedback about products, etc.
Any ideas on how to pay for the site?
Cheers,
Steve

Honestly, you really should use a database driven content management system where the content is stored in a database separate from the HTML frontend - kinda like this site.
Another benefit of a content management system is that it makes it easier to add new content since all future additions would be as easy as using this forum - type it into a text box and click submit. No programming skills needed.
PM me if you want to discuss that option further and I'll give you my number.
As far as hosting, I can recommend a few depending on which way you go. If you want to go with a content management system you will need a plan offering MySQL database. Some plans start at about the same price as that basic plan. Don't make more work for yourself in the future, by making a choice on something just because its free or cheap now.

So I take it that Steve and everyone is in the process of consolidating and transferring all the info in the sites listed to another server? Can't open up anything at the moment...
I'm going to see Steve tomorrow. I'll ask him about it. I'm in the process of getting a new site together for the Chicago club and would love to collaborate with with him in the effort.

OK, my old ISP decided to disable my account due to a policy change (the ISP owner was a fellow FD owner, and was providing hosting for free). Therefore, the move to:
FD3S.net
is going to happen a lot quicker than I was ready for (since I haven't had much time to focus on this).
Look for that domain to be up with the as-is Lightning in a World of Thunder site on it hopefully in the next day or two.
Cheers,

OK, the "old" site is back up. I had to sign up for one month of hosting to get them to bring it back up. Therefore, I will be moving it to FD3S.net before the one month period is up. Then the old URL will be dead.
Spread the word on the new URL (FD3S.net)!
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Alberto,
How would you recommend we go about getting the content management Db system going? I am familiar with Interwoven, WebSphere CM, etc., but don't have funds for those sorts of systems...
Cheers,
Steve

Just wanted to say thanks for the site. I used it and this forum for research before and after I bought my Rex. It was/is a asset to anyone who is looking for info.
Truly, a big thanks!

At least not for the site in question. I've worked with them and they are pretty nice depending on what you need to do, but doesn't fit your need. There are a few good open-source CMS systems that I've used that are free and do the job. This guy has a fair portion of the opensource systems up and running for people to try out - www.opensourcecms.com.
Mambo is pretty good. So are the Nukes. And the good part is that they can be modified if necessary pretty easily to fit whatever goals are desired.
The best part of a CMS system is that once they are up and running you will rarely need to change any code and content can be easily added/maintaned. Any non-technical person can pretty easily maintain the content since it is about as straightforward as posting to this board. You won't have this issue of looking for volunteers that might or might not know enough to post content to HTML and all the cleanup and integration of linking a few hundred pages into a cohesive, helpful web site.
Check it out and let me know if you have any questions.
