3rd gen rx-7 w/ 4 seats in japan?

i kno that some 3rd gen rx7's came with 4 seats and i heard that in japan its some kinda law that all cars need to have 4 seats because the island is small and somehow having 4 seats in a car will reduce the amount of cars on the road. i also heard that the rx7's that only have only 2 seats are special models that are able to go around that law because they are a limited production car where only 2000 can be made or something like that.

i would just like to clear this up. can anyone explain what the laws are? wouldent the honda NSX break this law since it has 2 seats? but as far as other japanese sports cars go everyone i can think of has 4 seats. supra, 300zx, 3000gt.....

I dunno about a law. But it REALLY cuts down in insurance costs and taxes in japan. They also have them in the UK I think.
Just like being over a certain length and width gives you a HUGE increase in taxes. There are many small things to cut down on taxes and insurance in japan.

Do you want to see some pictures of the 2+2 rear seats in an FD?

The way my cousin explained it to me, the back seats are more of a cultural requirement. It does help with insurance, but having a car with only 2 seats is considered "rude" to your friends if you driving somewhere, and have to leave someone behind. My friends and I always end up taking someone elses car, there are always 3 or 4 of us. It's not a law that a limited amount of cars can be exempt from. The back seats have a nice look to them, but I would never want to sit in them.

Eric might be right, after all in Japan you can't even blow your nose in public... I would assume that somebody might also get mad if you don't have another seat for them.

I don’t think it’s a law. I think its just an added feature on Japanese models. Not, because it's rude to not have back seats. I think this falls under the same category as the "myth" about J-spec engines that people get in the states..how the Japanese have to pay a tax when there car gets to 30,000K and its cheaper for them to junk it and get a new one, I can guarantee that the engine you get probably has more than 30,000k on it.....so don’t believe everything you hear about the Japanese
