300 miles is TOO far to drive an FD!

Oh my aching ***!
Went to OKC today, 300 mile round trip.....and I have to tell you, that is just TOO damned far to drive an FD in one day.....they simply are not meant for it.
Now maybe it is partly due to me being a fairly big guy at 6'1" and 205 pounds, but those seats.......ugh!

The good part is how fun the drive was, I averaged about 80 miles per hour on the trip back, partly due to a 51 mile run with a chick in a Mustang and another one in a turbo Eclipse in hot pursuit, where we were never under 90, sometimes pushing it up to 110 or so....the girls didn't want to play in the triple digit speeds, but they had NO trouble with 90 - 95! Ahhhhhhhh....college girls!

Oh yeah, I got 17.6 miles per gallon, too!

lol, I think long drives SUCK no matter what seats you got! I made a 300 mile trip in my brothers 98' ITR with GReddy T03 Turbo...that on the other hand was quite fun! Raced some lifted tacoma and he signaled us to the side of the road for some "fista cuffs" lol, did he really think i was gonna pull over? hehe.

Long trips are fun if you've got the right company... Plan on taking mine to Texas once I get a new motor. 1200 mile round trip.

Ive taken trips like that to miami across alligator ally. About 175 miles each way. Its just a very long strait road that connects naples with miami. I loved it...but then again im 6' 150lbs (purfect fit) Couldent have asked for more, great tunes, sun roof open, about 75 outside. Everyone is hauling ***. The way there stayed behind a LS 300 doing 120 90% of the time. Dropped to 90 b/c some jackass wouldnt move out of our way....On the way back 300zxTT and some Mercades that I cant remeber..badass though. We were at 140-150 70% of the way..never dropping below 100 though. Got to about 16X (was looking at the road so I dont know exactly) with the mercades..Z didnt wanna go that fast I guess. But did catch up once we dropped to 140ish again. We passed a yellow 2001 Diablo 34ish year old bastard rich guy (wish he would have joined) and 2 new porshe 911 TT with older ladies behind the wheel of thoes beasts (grrr). Was cool staying in 3 digits for 175 miles...once on regular roads though 50 seemed like I should get out and walk. Yes I know Im a dumbass.. dont flame me I know, i know. And I know deep down most of you would have loved it too.

Back in the day when mom drove me everywhere, we took a road trip and she tried to keep up with this Porshe and Vette that where racing. Needless to say the v-6 camaro just couldn't keep up.

Ummm, have to disagree with you . On Dec 22nd and 23rd I drove from Fort Hood (near Austin) TX to Morristown NJ for the holidays. I went east to GA and then north on 95 to NJ in an attempt to take the southern route and avoid any inclement weather.

All told, I traveled 1850 miles in two days, averaging over 20 mpg (I basically stayed off boost). No sore ***, either

I used to take my 94 PEP to the eastern shore once every two weeks, about 105 one way, in about 1hour 15 minutes... I'm 6' 205 and was quite comfortable. Maybe if I was 6'1" I wouldn't have been. Got about 380 mi. to the tank on those long trips averaging 80 or more.

On my way to CT in my Supra this summer a new BMWci and I cruised through NY and most of CT in no time at all never getting below 100. Hit it to 140 at one point and he was fading back but came up when I back it down a bit.
Next day a chic in another BMW was my driving partner through ME... Dig those chics in Beemers!!!

I have to agree. The seats aren't made for long travel they are made to hold you in place as you slid around that blind corner. long trips is one department where the Lazy boy that the Supra has as a seat wins.

Take my 110 HP 1988 Saab 900 with a 3 speed auto next time and then tell us how bad the FD is. Its comfortable, 0-60 in 14 seconds and almost goes 95 mph.

I'm 6'3" & 220lbs. I have to depress the clutch with my right foot to get my right leg under the steering wheel when I get in.
A 10 hour drive kills my *** and sometimes my kidneys, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
(imagine what it's like driving with a helmet!)

I don't have any problems with long trips..as long as I take my fat wallet out of my pocket. And I'm a little bigger (6'2" and more than 210. )

Maybe you should examine your seating position.

First of all, I kowtow to Goodfella.....Jesus, 1800 + miles in an FD.....you da man!

Secondly, I am reminded of the Car&Driver article, where it started out by saying something about nestling into the seat of an FD, the author glanced at the trip meter to estimate how long it would take for him to become uncomfortable, and he went on to describe the ride and drive and all that, and then quipped that when he had had enough, he looked down to see how far he had gone, and the odometer read three TENTHS of a mile.....har har har.....
But seriously, the support of the seats is awesome for spirited driving, but the under, side bolster just tries to force my *** into a position it doesn't want to be in....maybe I do need to readjust my position or something....
The hardest thing about long Interstate driving in cars like these is watching the speed....dammit, why can't we test for and get some sort of 'super-license' that would allow us to go faster? I'm not asking for all that much, maybe.....120 mph? Still a much "safer" speed in a sports car than a minivan at 80........

I took a mountain drive that lasted 5 hours, and was as comfortable as could be. granted I wasn't on some boring highway watching trees go by, but still. I am 5'10" only 150 lbs, but I always have backaches in other cars, at work, lying down. but in the FD I feel great. I guess the design of the seat suits me. I love it.

but 1800 miles on highway just seems boring nomatter what you are in.

1250 miles-Part II hopefully soon!

Just recently around Thanksgiving to be exact. I ventured from Clearwater FL (across the bay from Tampa) to Milford NJ. What a day that was. Left the day before thanksgiving. The day started when I flew in the back of a helo for 6 hours. That totally started the trip off right. haa haa......But needless-to-say I drove from Clearwater FL to around Florence South Carolina the first evening. I was pretty damn comfortable. I'm 6'2" and 180. The seats in the FD are definately made for narrow ppl. But after the first 800 or so miles of the trip my FD had started to make some pretty wierd noises. After day two in the car and sitting in traffic outside of Baltimore and almost getting a 60 dollar ticket for not having 50 cents for the toll, I finally made it home. Pretty stresses out from the traffic, but glad to be home to see my family. All in all, the car had to stay up in NJ and is now at KDR getting a rebuilt motor with all that good stuff. Like a streetport. Can't wait to get it back!!

Martini you got it!

I used to end up with a dead *** when I drove over 100 miles. I now take out my wallet and I'm good for all day (700-1000 miles). I actually like the stock seats, they're comfy and have plenty of support (well, for sane street driving anyway).

Well Rich is crazy for taking that journey in his FD... out of my league when it comes to long trips in the old leather seats... but I do make a 6-700 mile each way trip from dallas to corpus every couple of weeks and thats always fun... O wait... I can't do that again untill my car runs
Take it easy,
Ryker

When I moved from Michigan to California, I was all set to drive my other car but the AC died the day I was set to leave. I had to go pick up my FD from the transport company and give them my daily driver to transport instead. I drove the 2400 miles alone in 2.5 days with two hotel stays along the way. I really enjoyed the drive and was pretty comfortable the whole way. I've also taken the car on a 500 mile (one-way) and 360 mile trip and it was fine. I like long drives -- all you have to do is drive! It is a nice escape from the daily grind.
