How much? What I mean is, at least from my experience, your taking a big chance w/ second hand turbos. I would suggest not getting too much cash involved because you might have to turn around and rebuild them. I bought a set w/ less than a 1,000 after, everything looked and checked out great. Put them on the car and they leaked oil from the exhaust manifold. Hope you have better luck.

I took mine to a local turbo/fuel injector shop in business for 35 years. Whereas most all of there business is on large diesels, they see enough turbo assemblies to know what parts are acceptable and which need replacing.

You should not be able to move the compressor wheels in/out (axially). Play in this direction indicates a dying turbo. You should be able to move the compressor wheel side-side a little bit, but do it gently (don't scrape the internal sleeve bearing) and make sure the wheel won't touch the walls.
Manifold cracking sucks, but will be almost a guarantee with 48k on them. Small cracks leading outward are not a big problem, as long as they don't extend past where the gasket was. Cracks around the precontrol door should not go completely through, and the door should look as if it seals fairly well. Ideally you should inspect the wastegate in a similar way, but you have to disassemble it into halves to really see that.
