2nd gear shift to 3rd gear???

Hello everyone, I have to say you guys have been great in helping me solve some issues with my car, but...

I've encountered another problem. It seems that everytime I fix something, a new problem arises.

It goes something like this:

1st shift to 2nd (nice and smooth)

2nd shift to 3rd (rpms drop to idle, as if the engine and turbos died... At this point I have to take my foot of the gas because a bad smell begins to fill the cabin of my car...This only happens from 2nd shift to 3rd.)

3rd shift to 4th (nice and smooth)

4th shift to 5th (nice and smooth)

Every shift is done at redline, 7400 rpm...What could be wrong with the transition from 2nd gear thru 3rd. Due to this problem, I have to start my rolling runs at 3rd gear!!!

Please, any and all ideas are welcomed...Thanks in advance.

I think that it is due to bad sychros caused by previous 3d gear misses. Matching revs are a whole lote more difficult for the transmission to handle as the revs go up, and when you push in the clutch, even for the slightest pause, you lose rotational flywheel speed faster than you can say ouch. Once your transmission is spinning at 80 mph, and your eninge is spinning at 30mph speed you have issues. The smell, I am assuming is clutch, but if it's anything else, you have a bigger issue than just a 3rd shift miss.
The only time this ever happens to me is when I am hot on the throttle like you are saying.

Are you sure that you're hitting 3rd? I've had that happen a couple of times, but only when I miss and go right to 5th. You're RPMs will obviously drop like you describe. I bought a torque brace and pre-loaded the driver side (pulled the motor towards the pass side) and that seemed to take care of it. Not a perm. fix, but a damn good temp one.

Hey guys, thanks for the input, but..

I'm positive I'm in third gear when this happens...Let's just say I miss the third gear shift, my foot would still be planted, leaving me to over rev the engine...In my case, my foot stays planted in third, and you won't hear the motor or see the rpm needle rev up...at this point, after about several seconds, I would let go the gas and just let the car roll.

As far as the smell goes, its definately not fuel or oil. It smells fowl as in sour like, pretty wierd, maybe its the clutch, but I'm too not sure. Actually this is a good point, I've noticed that after I recently changed the tranny fluid, the intensity of the odor had dropped drop dramatically.

Just for ***** and giggles don't power shift (assuming you are). Go ahead and still wind up the motor, but shift slower. If you're just driving casually does this happen? If not, you may be pushing all the way over when you get on it. Unless something is seriously wrong with your tranny you're probably missing it. If you're not going to 3rd, you're either in 5th and your motor speed will drop like a rock as you describe, back to 1st and you'll grind the hell outta the gate and probably kill the motor or somewhere else. The smell is 100% clutch. It's a wierd smell. If you take it to emissions you'll probably smell it 'cause I haven't met a guy there that can drive stick. Try that and see what happens...

Railgun 69,

I appologize for not replying sooner (I've been working on my honda- changing clutch, axles, belts, etc.). I know, why bother, but thats another story...

Now back to the real sports car... Yes, I tried shifting slower, making sure I'm in gear, but it still happens. Remeber, this only happens when I hit 7400rpm and shift from 2nd to 3rd gear.

When I shift early, lets say 4000rpm, its find. Only on DRAG condition dose this happens.

So currently I been reduced to freeway runs, starting from 3rd gear and on. How disappointing this is, since this car is fast as hell (I didn't put any real mods in yet), and I can't get the full potential of this sweet ride.

Thanks again...
