Is 20w50 the blanket rule for climates above freezing?
Is 20w50 the blanket rule for climates above freezing?
I searched and read, seems there's a split between people that prefer 20w50 and some that like 10w30, is this due to climate directly? I'm in Michigan and it's going to be 35-70f for the next month or two until it's time to change again (2k intervals), what would you guys run in my climate?
Well, guess what, you're still going to get a split in this thread....
I know some would say 20w50 year round, but I would use 10w30 for that temp range. Especially for a car that is only street-driven.

Yeah I don't push it hard but only for a gear or maximum 2 gears a time, if I don't "need" 20w50 i'd sure like to get the minute fuel economy benefits from a thinner oil *shrug*
I do notice with ~1800 miles on my current change though it's not very dark and smells of fuel pretty good, common again but still crazy to me

I know alot of people in Canada use 10w30. I use it and when I do my oil change after 3k it is pretty dirty, black but not black hole black. Castrol GTX
I mention us Canucks because we might have a more similar climate to you than say Texas or CA.

Depends if your running sythetic or not. If so, doesn't matter what time of year your using the 20/50. I use Amsoil 20/50 and did so when I drove my 7 as a daily back in the day...lol....
this is a pretty old thread im guessing but i have some questions bout which oil to use.
Pretty much, i Daily Drive my FD during the summer months, up until about October/November, until it starts getting super cold or starts snowing in which case shes stored away in my garage until spring, but my question is this, is 20w50 a good oil choice for summer driving? or should i be looking at 10w30. at this point my "place" says Johnson City Tennessee but im in the process of moving and still live in Connecticut so i wanted to know for about now til November, if i should stick with teh 10w30 thats in there or switch to 20w50?
