Hi, are they still making the japanese model over in japan?
I believe it's the type RZ right? it's white, with nicer wheels,
and spoiler?

If so, whats the price tag on it, when converted to US?
aside from the downpipe, is it different mechanicaly from out american FD's?

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that 99 was the last year the RX7 was produced in Japan. Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

ah hell, I was going to be short and to the point but I guess I'll answer the question completely.

Go to www.mazda.co.jp (select Japanese), go to the car lineup section, and check out their section on the RX-7. you can't read it, but you can see they have a whole lineup of RX-7s still being produced including the RB, RS, R, RZ and now the Bathurst R.

 

There is a full line of Japanese version RX7s from automatic, 5spd, RS (I think that's what it was called) to the RZ. This is based on the last time I checked (8 mos ago) on Mazda's Japanese site. Just go to Mazda and follow the link. You can figure things out even if you don't read Japanese.

 

To clarify, yes Japan has never stopped producing their regular line of RX-7's. They have changed the model lines a bit here and there over the years. Also, every year or two they bring out special limited edition models. Current lineup consists of Type R, RS, and 3 different Type RB's(5spd,AT, and S-package 5spd)

There currently is NO RZ model right now. The last RZ model was the limited edition 1999 white one of which only 175 were made. Mazda just announced another limited edition model based on the Type R package which Mazda calls the "Bathurst R" of which 500 will be made.

 

The new Type R Bathurst R is about $29k US when converted. And yes, theres LOTS of differences(from major to minor) that the new ones have over the old american FD's. Japan RX-7's had a revision done in '96 and another in '99(think of how the FC's improved from the '86-88 models to the '89-91 models) Pretty much all the bugs from the US '93-95 models have been worked out along with adding lots of improvements.

Think of how many people in the US would buy a brand new, trouble-free FD for ~$30k...

i mean i'm considering paying almost 20k for a 53kmile 95 FD.

Yes, some small changes were made to the 13B that allowed it to run 165 PS in '96 and 280 PS after the '99 update.

New turbos with more boost (jumped from 9.08 psi to 10.82 psi), improved cooling (up 20%), enhanced apex seal lubrication, better engine management and a less restictive exhaust are some of the reasons cited for the increase. New Bilstein shock absorbers on the top of the line Type RS model add to the already acclaimed suspension, and a facelifted front fascia drastically improves cooling to the radiator, brake ducts, intake, intercooler and oil coolers. An adjustable rear-wing on the Type R and Type RS models allows control over drag and downforce. Taller 17" wheels and fat 235/255mm series rubber complimented the increased power with added traction.
