1st turbo boost is good, but car got slower off the line?
My stock 93 automatic (except for downpipe/exhaust) took a turn for the worst. It suddenly became slow off the line and slower responding to the accelerator. I've had it checked out and the 1st turbo is putting out 12 psi boost, my boost gauge confirms this, so it appears its working correctly. The car has new plugs, wires, fuel pump and has been diagnosed for possible problems with the turbo system and they can't find anything wrong. Can someone suggest any possible causes? Is it possible that boost is being diverted after the boost gauge connection but before it gets into the engine and therefore my boost gauge registers correct boost? In other words somewhere after the boost gauge connection but before it enters the engine is there anyway for some of the boost to be diverted resulting in registering full boost, yet not getting the full benefit? The problem surfaced after I took my car in to get a tune up. New plugs, wires, some vac hoses and a fuel pump. Well after I got it back the first turbo was kicking in like never before, it was awesome. It would throw me back and it came on quickly at just a slight press of the gas peddle. At the time I never had a boost gauge. This dramatic performance increase lasted 4 days, then something happened and the car went back to a sluggish boost lag pattern. So I took it back to have them check it out. They couldnt find anything wrong and suggested I put a boost gauge on, which I did.
They dyno'd the car and its putting out an impressive 214 RWHP for a completely stock car except for down pipe and exhaust. It would have really helped if I had a turbo gauge in from the beginning, then maybe I would have seen the boost engage faster, but by just seat of the pants, its so dramatic that I dont think I could have imagined this. For 4 days it ran so well, it felt like the boost came on so much quicker and stronger, now its just a gradual climb and the auto trans almost always downshifts when i step on it, before during the 4 days it was running so well it would not need to downshift all the time, it would just kick in and take off
If anyone can offer other possible causes, I would GREATLY appreciate it. It's a real bummer driving the car like this, compared to how quick the the 1st turbo kicked in. Now i have to press much harder on the acclerator to get it to move from a slow speed. Just not fun anymore. May have to sell it if I can't fix it.
