1995 JDM FD Ignition problems
Until you disassemble, it's a bit academic.
It was worse than your's, we found the stationary gear teeth ended up being machined by rotating components, thrust washers manky and the ec shaft needed a minor polish. With an engine that was likely second hand, might be more peace of mind going through it - unless you just want to sell it on.

I have heard people ask about whether you can replace a rats nest with the rats box.
This is the first case I have heard of someone actually having done it.
I suppose people more often go for "emissions delete" and eliminate both.

You’re never really gonna know the condition of that engine until you open it up. You can tell a lot of what is going on between a compression test, seeing the front stack and pulling the front stationary gear out. I don’t disagree that going through everything is a good idea if you’re planning on keeping the car long-term. I just try to look at the other side of the coin sometimes. The “ while I’m in there “ rabbit hole runs deep.
Don’t let the unfortunate events here deter you either. Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. That’s all part of it.
