Hey Paul, why don't you adopt me as the son you never had.

Since I've had 20 years of schooling, you can give the RX7 to me as a belated graduation gift for all those years when we never got to know each other (hell, how could we, you haven't adopted me yet).

I know you're the best daddy ever except that I'm probably older than you but hell, it's not like we're related by blood.

IMO, Age is never a problem. Immaturity and Stupidity are generally the things that will result in "problems".

Giving a FD as a present, is a HUGE gift. You're giving her a sports car. One that is fast, but as a sports car, requires more maintenance than your typical car. (Do you think she can handle a financial situation should something happen...like leaking turbos, engine rebuild time, etc.?). As others have said, it is almost 10 years old. Any car that has reached this point, will need to be freshened up, in some areas.

Also, keep in mind that the RX-7:

1) consumes more fuel than most cars.
2) Requires premium fuel. (91 Octane in CA).
3) Gas in California can be rather expensive.
4) Auto insurance in CA is not cheap.

Here is something I forgot to mention earlier. Knowledge. Does she know about the rotary engine and basic car maintenance?

All of these areas are important,...and if she doesn't know any of this stuff,...then I would not give her the RX-7 as a present.

Just my opinions...

 

Unless she is as obsessed with the car and as interested in taking care of it as you have been, I would get her something else to take to LA. You never know when something might go wrong and it would definitely be a burden for her to have to take it to a rotary specialist. Even if nothing goes wrong with it, you have to admit, the car invites trouble, both on the street and in the parking lot. If the car is going to have to be parked in any kind of public or communal lot on a regular basis, I would definitely get her something else.

I agree with all of the statements about the reliablity mods. The air separation tank (AST) for instance, is a plastic tank mounted on the inward right side of the intercooler towards the front center of the motor. It's basically a coolant overflow tank. It's a 10-year-old piece of plastic. They start to crack. should it, as a result of either age, or heat, etc, you get a new motor. If she is driving the car on a regular basis, but doesn't have time nor the direct interest to monitor the mechanical state of the car, she get's a new motor, to the tune of $4k.

If you keep it, keep an eye out for the aformentioned items. If you give it to her, make sure that she does. It sounds like you've got a rare, unmodded example of a fine sports car. It would be a shame to harm it.
