1993 sunroof troubleshooting
Hi all,
I'm having an issue with my 93 FD's sunroof. I swapped it because the one that came on the car from the previous owner was super rusted out with missing drainholes (so many surprises the previous owner didn't disclose, gotta love it). Currently, I replaced the sunroof frame fine, but my sunroof doesn't open; I want to make sure it's not an issue with the motor. I've been looking at the wiring diagrams for my car, but I'm not great at understanding them; here's what I have so far (hopefully ya'll can get me on the right track/guide me):
Using Z-99 of the wiring diagram:
How would I test the sunroof's opening and closing function? If I want to test the sunroof opening, should I be sending power to the Y/R wire on the motor, or the Y/R wire on the sunroof relay? And if I want to test the sunroof closing, should I be sending power to the Y/L wire on the sunroof relay? I'm leaning towards sending power to the relay being the correct option in both cases, but would like some confirmation. Any help is appreciated as I'm not confident at all with wiring diagrams.
The old sunroof was working when I took it out so maybe something isn't connected properly post-swap. If that's the case, does anyone have any wires in particular I should be looking out for to ensure things are connected properly?

First thing I'd do to rule out mechanical issues with the sunroof is to simply operate it manually with the crank handle. If it opens & closes smoothly without any binding or requiring herculean strength to rotate the crank, you've ruled out mechanical issues and have an electrical problem. If you don't have the OEM sunroof crank handle, it's just a metric Allen wrench, I forget the size. There's a plastic plug in the headliner you need to remove to get access to the mating hex where you insert the crank.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did that prior to install and once more to verify, which is why I think I could be missing a connection somewhere. Offhand do you know how to read the wiring diagram so I could test it? I have a power probe t send power but just unsure of where to send/check.

Check the 15A sunroof fuse, if it’s bad, that’s likely your problem.
If the fuse is good, find connector M-01 for the sunroof motor. Ground the black wire and apply 12V+ to the Yellow wire with the red stripe, it should open. To close it move the 12V+ from Y/R to the yellow wire with the blue stripe, it should return closed. If that works you have a problem with the sunroof switch, the power wiring to the fuse or switch, or the black ground wire that goes to connector M-01. If it doesn’t work verify you have 12V+(with the switch depressed open on Y/R and closed on Y/L) and ground at M-01, verify the sunroof motor is not reading open or grounded across Y/R and Y at M-03, and then try replacing the sunroof relay.

Could also be the switch if you don't feel a tactile click when pressing it, not sure if this has the testing info you need but this is how I troubleshot mine:

i had a problem where my sunroof stopped working all of the sudden. Turns out the switch had just gotten too filthy over the decades. I was able to take it out, disassemble and clean it and it worked good as new. There was lots of tarnish on the contacts that just had to be cleaned. Hope this helps.

An easy way to test for a low volts or poor contacts condition is to gently push up on the center rear section of the sunroof with only 1 or 2 pounds of force while pushing the open switch.. Pushing harder could damage the motor drive.
It's where the sunroof motor works hardest and draws most current.
If nothing happens, you probably have a no power or dead motor issue. If the sunroof slowly retracts and closes, you have a low volts condition somewhere in the circuit. Sunroof motor, or switch or battery volts would be where I check next.
Could you possibly swap the motor from your previous sunroof , since it worked ok ?
