1600's for daily driver or 850's in primary location

does anyone have any input regarding the replacing of the secondaries with some 1600's and a rail from k2rd? it seems like they "say" that it is a bolt in application. can anyone attest to this. or is there a demon lying in the dark.

would this be a feasible mod say as compared to the swapping of the primaries for 850's. rotary performance wants ~600 for the procedure, which would be more than the 2 new 1600's and the rail from k2rd.

i need to know which would be more beneficial for me as geared for the daily driver friendliness.

i am ordering a power fc, and need to knwo if this unit has the regulatory ability to control these injectors to suit....

Those 1600's might be a little too much for your current setup. I would go with just the primary swap until you really went crazy with your mods. Also your fuel mileage will obviously go down quite a bit with the 1600's if that is an issue for you.

850's in the primary significantly affected the driveability of my 7 with large streetport and single, may not have as big of an affect on a stock engine and twins, but if you are concerned about daily driveability and money isn't a huge issue, go with the 1600's. But for Christ's sake, get a Power FC before you do anytyhing else, you are asking for trouble with all that on a stock ECU.

The reason why most people stick with the stock primary injectors and upgrade the secondaries is because it will effect your idle. When you put the 850's on the primaries they won't be able to atomize fuel as well as the stock primaries. Save your self the hassle and just get 1300 secondaries which are your stock secondaries just bored out. With the 1300's you don't have to get a modified fuel rail. Send them out, there's a shop that does it I forget the name, maybe someone else can chime in and it will be a lot cheaper...

if he plans on going single, he'll probably end up needing more than 550 + 1300, so why not go ahead and upgrade to 1600 and be done with it. However, if you're stickign with stock twins and/or less than 17 psi, 550 +1300 would be adequate, cheap, and probably your best bet.

17 psi is a death wish for stock twins. Plus it all depends on what single he goes for and plans do change. The 1300's can support a single, now just what size, not sure...

Answers to the point:

PowerFC can control 1600's just fine for a daily driver, BUT you might need dyno tuning to tune out the roughness on transition. I had hesitation when mine kicked in until Dave/KDRotary tuned me up and the car drives very well now with 550/1600.

The rail is 95% bolt in, but you should be aware that you will need an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator (as well as some new stainless steel lines) if you use the rail because the stock FPR is part of the stock rail setup. Additionally, you will need to wire in some resistors to make the whole setup work nicely.

I would not put 850s in the primaries for a car that you want to drive nicely. I think you could make it work, but to be honest, I think the 1600 (or 1300) secondary route is better.

What are your final horsepower goals? Are you going single? Stock twins? If you want to stay under about 350-400 RWHP, just do upgraded secondaries like 850s overbored to 1300. If you want 350+ RWHP just skip that an go straight for 1600s.

That's my $0.02

Brian

P.S. I agree with the other poster... all those mods on a stock ECU is ASKING FOR a blown engine!!!! Get more fuel, get it tuned!

I couldn't have said it any better myself.
Remember you can't be a penny wise and a pound (or two, too much boost) foolish with these cars.
If you have the horsepower bug, you will sooner or later need more fuel. Too much fuel is better then not enough.
I myself made the mistake of going with 1300's the first time.
While they are better then nothing, they won't support my future hp goals.

If you install the 850's correctly and tune the lower portion of your map i.e. idle, the 850's will work JUST AS WELL as the 550's. I used to run four 850's. Switched to 550/1300's, but with my single being installed this weekend, I'll probably go back to 850 primaries for the additional fuel needed to run over 425hp at the stock fuel pressure level. FYI, it took me five minutes lowering the maps around idle on my PFC to get the 850's to idle perfectly.
