13BREW true power output?
13BREW true power output?
I was thinking about something the other day whilst talking to some youngsters about modern day tuning, and one of them asked a pretty good question regarding increasing power output, or if that was even the proper term. Meaning, let's take the FD's engine: It has a stock output of 255 hp, correct? Okay, is this as it is installed in the car? We know that there are certain mods that we can make for more power, a good 30 hp can be had with an aftermarket intake, exhaust, underdrive pulleys, etc. So, is the engine actually say a 280 to 300 hp engine that has power robbing stock parts, or is it only the 255 hp, and all that the mods do is free that up? Taken further then, what is the power output of a 13BREW running no accessories, not even a water pump, with a totally unrestricted intake and exhaust?
Good question but i do believe that its 255hp with all the accesories and the emissions systems in place. This is flywheel hp running your water pump, alternator, air pump, and everything else including the exhaust system that came with the car (both cats). Look at a window sticker on a new car those readings have to be done by the car manufacturer to comply with emissions laws. I think the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineering) has something to do with it as well. So the answer to your question is yes it is more powerful then it is rated as. Its rated at 255hp in stock trim @ the flywheel.

back in the old days the american car manufacturers used to rate thier engines with no intake/ headers/ no accesories etc. this is called sae gross hp. this is why 60's american cars are rated at 450hp and put 200 the wheels (my 1959 tr3 is rated 100hp with as in stalled in the car). in about 1972 they decided to start rating all engines as installed in the car, sae net hp. of course there is no answer to your question it is both a 255hp engine and a 300hp engine

Ahhhh.... so next time you hear about a 450hp car (manufactured in the 60's) dont get scared?
Also, does anyone have a ballpark figure on what the 13B is on its own, minus emissions, running all other parts, etc. etc.
