13B-REW Oil System operation?

Hi guys, this thread is specifically for my father. He's 70 yrs of age, retired and helps with the importing of FD's from Japan to Australia. He's asked me to ask you guys a question about how the oiling system works in the FD3S engines.

We know that there is something of a wax thermo pellet device in the front crank nut assembly, with the spring. But unsure how it works, or what its function is. I think Atkins Rotary had a good explanation somewhere once, but I cant find it again.

There's a relief valve in the main oil pump, in the sump. We guess that functions much the same as the oil pump on a normal pushrod V8 engine- over pressure relief?

Now, is there some sort of thermo pellet device in one or any of the front mounted oil coolers behind the bumper? Because it would make sense that once the oil gets up to temp, the lines to the coolers would open, and the coolers would cool the oil. My dad seems to think there is some sort of thermo valve in the lines or the coolers themselves, but nobody can verify that.

Lastly, what is the 'normal' range of oil pressure for an FD3S 13B-REW? How many psi at idle, and at max regulated pressure?
The oil pressure gauges in the FD3S are a bit confusing- we have had over 20 FD cars in the warehouse at one time, and every one of them has idled with the needle pointing to the first mark on the gauge (IE not halfway, but the lower quarter mark). We wonder if this is low, but then again, all the cars do it?
I might add that our cars are all either Aussie or JDM, so the gauges are marked in metric KG. This may be different to what you USDM guys see when you look at your gauges (are yours in PSI?) I really dont know.

If the gauge seems to be sporadic in its operation, is it true that replacing the thermo pellet thingy in the front of the crank will cure it? (ruling out that the gauge works fine electronically)..

So many damn questions I know. I really need an overview of how the oiling system works, and what regulation points it has. Someone has to know the full story on the whole system? I'd really appreciate it. I'm going to print out the most detailed reply I get, and show it to my Dad, and hopefully it answers what he wants to know

Thanks guys.

There are tons of posts out there on your question. This one addresses the temps: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...cooler+install. This one address the oil cooler thermostat(s): https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ler+thermostat. Both of these should get you started in the right direction.

The thermal pellet is a thermostat for the rotor cooling oil jets, equivalent to piston squirters on a conventional reciprocating engine.

You can see in the pic that one side of the rotor has a gear that mates to the stationary gear on the side housing. The other side of the rotor, the back side, has passages through which motor oil can flow.
